AL ELLEMA

Bigtime business are into big businesses, getting the bulk of natural resources into their stocks at cheap cost. These resources are classified as future buys where future stocks of oil and fuel are allegedly contracted and paid in the present for products still to be delivered in the future. The high risk of the purported investment is often threatened by war mongering nations that bring into mainstream media the apparent saber-rattling that would affect the production in the future. The uncertainty of the paid products being produced at the agreed time is a serious cause not just for alarm but real anxiety on the part of the buyer who may no longer see the day when of delivery of the products paid for.
It mayhap be the reason why those engaged in future buys would do everything within their means to protect their interest by confronting those who pose a threat to their business. Having spent so much on an investment that is appeared as a calculated risk but is now under threat of an impending disturbance of peace, the future buyer would certainly be more than willing to spend more than what is necessary to ensure that their investments are secured.

Even the threat in the biological warfare tagged as covid19, investors are seen as taking their interventions to the front with the end of protecting their interests. They may not be identifiable in the mainstream but their unseen hand could only be inferred from the acts of those they push akin to pawns on the chessboard. People could hardly untie the knots of the strings attached to the true forces behind. One can only intuit from the results and trace it back to the roots of tangled strings.

The global situation affecting the stewardship of God-given resources is similarly replicated down to the grassroots. Where meager resources are for grabs by people in dire need, greedy businessmen would take volumes of such scare resources and hoard it for future huge profits. The downside rarely happens as when oversupply overtakes the hoarded goods.

There too is the cornering of privileges to operate public services or utilities. Such is prevalent in the grant of franchises to businessmen or business corporations that have strong connections with the powers that be. In the public eye nowadays are public utilities that had taken a stranglehold of electric power and water resources. People are aware that electricity is generated by geothermal energy that is sourced from Tongonan, Leyte. Wonder why our electricity cost is too high despite our region being the source of electricity.

Another natural resource is water which is God gave us for free. It is only the services in bringing water to our homes that we are supposed to pay. Yet, we keep on paying for too expensive a cost to the franchise holder operating our water systems. And people gnash for spending too much for such poor water service.

Ka-klaro hadto nga imo inup, baga ‘nim pag-abat hin tinuod. Ngani, sumala ‘tim nanunumduman, haros tinuod ini tanan. Maaram daw ini hira nga kamo an tag-iya. Hi Tinoy la ito, usa nira nga bugto, it para-agi didto para kadtoon an lube nga iya sanggutan.

Diri la kamo it may mga reklamo ha ira, pati gihap it kan Carlos kabugto-an, nga puros kababayin-an ngan mga inasaw-an na gihap. Baman it ira kaasaw-an nga kalalakin-an, diri liwat nanginginlabot, tungod kuno kay diri manggud hira it tinuod nga tag-iya han tuna.

“Hagi, diri ngani it hira na-respitar kan Tatay, ano’t paka-disiplina hito?” sumat ni imo Ate Lupeng, usa pa nga bugto.

Asay la nahimo ni Carlos an pagpinamati; waray ka gud nabati-an nga ginyakan hini bis maguti.

Ha imo paghibaro, mga lima pala ka-tuig tikang nga ini nga mga tawo nahingada han kan Tay Ludring tuna. Nakita mo dayon an pira ka-gallon nga tuba nga nakada bawbaw han lamesa. An mga nanay naman, sagipo pagserbi han mangaraon, han ira mga kalugaringon, ngan han ira mga anak. Waray gud man mag-iha, bumati ka hin gugli-at tikang ha ubos, dagku nga boses hin kalalakin-an ngan pangurinit, pangurawang hin nagkakahadluk nga kababayin-an ug kabataan. Natigdaan ka, ngan kumusog hin grabe an putok han imo kasing-kasing kay nabati ka nga didto ha ubos, bumutho in makalilisang nga araway. Ginkita mo an sundang nga ginsang-at ni Carlos dida han iya butangan—waray na ini didto. Nangurog ngan nanluya an bug-os mo nga kalawasan, nagsirum an pagkita, hasta nga nahirusmok ka dida han imo tinitindugan ngan nawarayan hin balati-an.

Didto ha may portahan, nakada na nalingkud hi Mana Tania, an asawa ni Tay Ludring, nga iroy nira Marciano. Sige gihap an iya pagtinuok, naghuhulat han imo pagmata.

Hinay-hinay ka nga lumingkod, lawas maluyahay, ulo in malipong. “Mana Tania, ano an natabu?” pakiana mo han bisita.

“Agi Iday, makangingirhat it panhitabu,” siring han tigurang, namamahid hin luha.

Gin-istorya ha imo ni Mana Tania an nanhitabu. Samtang daw an kalalakin-an nag-iirignum, nawara la hi Carlos hin tigda, ngan waray hira igsarabut han pagbalik hini nga may dara na ngay-an nga sundang.

Kinahanglan madig-on ka, pinsar mo, kay amo ini an tugon han imo hinigugma nga asawa—an bantayan ngan panginano-on an iyo mga anak, nga yana waray iba nga tatapuran kon diri hi ikaw nala.

On no-child-left-behind

0

Intention-wise, the “no-child-left-behind” policy of the Department of Education (DepEd) is indeed noble. It surely is for the benefit and welfare of the schoolchildren. But the domino effect it creates has some unpleasant consequences.

Since the result it aims to achieve is somewhat forced, teachers are also compelled to do some things that are undesirably “forced”. Again, the objective is good and commendable, but it is also close to impossible, given the short period of time to realize it, the voluminous non-teaching tasks teachers are made to do, the numerous students there are in each grade level, and the fact that the skills to teach should have been learned in the earlier grades, and are no longer the cargo of teachers in the upper levels.

An impossible aim, therefore, is also given a quick solution by the concerned teachers, seemingly giving what it deserves to get. The concerned students, though not possessing the learning skills expected of them in certain grade levels, are given passing grades by their teachers, otherwise, these latter will be the ones to suffer the consequences as though it is their fault. So, mediocrity and ignorance are passed on to higher years.

Who suffers as a result of this mass promotion thing? Of course, it’s the students who know nothing about the lessons and skills they are expected to learn. Who should be penalized for such a failure, the teachers? We don’t think so unless they are rid of their clerical and secretarial tasks, their students are reduced in number, they are given longer time, and the teachers teaching the basic skills are allowed to do so, which means that if they are expected to teach reading in English, they should be made to do it, not that they are made to teach the mother tongue, instead.

Instead of blaming the teacher-factor, or the student-factor, for the obvious failure of this scheme, why don’t we question its proponents? Were they practical enough when they came up with it? Did they reckon it’s not measurable, doable, and achievable? We don’t think so. It’s just being ambitious. It doesn’t help the teachers at all, the learners, or the system. It’s just promoting mediocrity among the learners, causing embarrassments in the process. Surely, it needs an urgent revisit.

TACLOBAN CITY– The city government of Calbayog has revived one of its major tourist attractions.

The Calbayog Zipline was reopened to the public on Easter Sunday with Mayor Raymund Uy leading the ceremony.

The attraction was first opened in 2016 but was shut down four years later due to the pandemic caused by coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

In his message, Mayor Uy expressed his deep appreciation for the project’s development team and partners and emphasized that the Calbayog Zipline is not just an adventurous attraction, but a testament to the city’s commitment to tourism development, job creation, and economic growth.

He also highlighted the role of the zipline in promoting tourism in Calbayog which is seen as a vital sector for its economy and in providing livelihood and job generation to communities around the site.

For its re-operation, the city government will only allow 50 tourists a day who can try the 750-meter long zipline that starts above the ridge of Malajog and will land at the Daraga islet.

It is open from Friday to Sunday from 9 in the morning up to 3 afternoon.
Visitors and tourists who wanted to try doing the zipline no longer need to call for reservations.

There are two styles that tourists may choose in doing the zipline; the superman which costs P350 and the seating position which costs P300.

A boat ride from Daraga Islet back to the mainland is already included in the costs of the zipline.

For those who are not adrenaline junky and just wanted to enjoy nature, they may trek along the trail going to the view deck and enjoy the view of Malajog beach from the ridge, enjoy the sounds of birds chirping, and different types of butterflies which cost P20.

Tourists may also just enjoy strolling along the one-kilometer stretch of sand at Malajog Beach or take a dip and swim or snorkel to ease the hot temperature brought by summer’s heat.

“Dagway,” a Waray term for image, reflection, or light, was first launched in 2020 by amateur and professional photographers in Eastern Samar.

Following a two-year break due to the pandemic coronavirus disease(COVID-19), the team behind Project Dagway made the decision to once more offer free class portraits to those who cannot afford them, particularly in the remote schools of the province where graduating students cannot afford to have a graduation picture.

In 2020, more than 800 students benefited from the project which was implemented by the group in the towns of Jipapad, Arteche, and Taft.

“We want to continue our advocacy in helping thru the lens” Miguel Voloso, one of the administrators said in a statement.

The group is set to travel and have its pictorial on the Island of Homonhon, Guiuan where about 300 graduating students on the whole island are set to be captured for free graduation photos.

They are also set to visit the town of Maslog, the interior village of Hinolaso in Dolores municipality, and Matarinao in Salcedo town.

The project is a partnership with the provincial office of the Department of Education (DepEd) which identified and provided data on the students, and Sinirangan Pageants, a group of professional people in various fields who assisted with the students’ care and gave them make-up before the photo shoot.

The group had set up a small studio with lights and strobes inside a classroom.
They photograph each student individually while they are wearing a toga, then print the images out as A4-sized photos for each student.
