In 2018, the Philippines closed Boracay for six months after years of uncontrolled development and inadequate sewage treatment turned its famous waters into what the president called a “cesspool.” That moment exposed an uncomfortable truth: development that destroys the natural world eventually damages itself. I do not believe we must choose between prosperity and nature, but I firmly reject prosperity built on nature’s ruin.

Boracay was not defeated by tourism itself. It was defeated by excess without discipline—too many establishments, too little sewage infrastructure, weak enforcement, and the convenient belief that a beautiful island could endlessly absorb human waste. The closure protected the island, but it also interrupted the livelihoods of thousands of workers, revealing the human cost of neglect. For me, this is the first serious lesson: environmental damage is not an abstract problem reserved for scientists and activists; it reaches hotel workers, boatmen, vendors, families, and every visitor who expects clean water without asking who has paid for it.

The usual argument presents nature and development as quarreling siblings: one must lose so the other can thrive. I find that argument both narrow and lazy. A forest is not merely land waiting for a road, a river is not simply water waiting for a factory, and a coral reef is not an ornament beneath a tourist boat. They are living systems that provide food, protection, clean water, livelihoods, and cultural meaning. The IPBES global assessment warns that biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people are deteriorating worldwide, with consequences for human well-being and sustainable development. In other words, nature is not standing outside the economy; it is quietly carrying much of it on its back.
Technology complicates the picture because it often arrives wearing the costume of cleanliness. A digital classroom may reduce paper, a smartphone may replace many physical tools, and data systems can help communities monitor forests or predict disasters. Yet the cloud is not a cloud at all but a vast physical network of servers, electricity, minerals, factories, and discarded devices. UNEP notes that digitalization demands natural resources and energy, while low recycling rates contribute to electronic waste. I welcome useful technology, but I dislike the comforting fiction that anything called “smart” is automatically sustainable.

It’s not for us to abandon innovation but to make it answerable to the places it enters. In the Philippines, mangroves are already performing work that expensive concrete structures often try to imitate: they help protect people and property from storms, floods, erosion, and other coastal hazards. Their roots may look untidy beside a new resort or reclamation project, but I would rather trust those tangled roots than celebrate a polished seawall that transfers danger somewhere else. Nature-based infrastructure can address development needs while also supporting climate action and biodiversity, according to a report highlighted by UNEP.

Still, conservation cannot become another elegant word used to silence poor communities. When a mine, dam, road, or tourism project is proposed, the people who depend on the land and water deserve more than a public consultation conducted as a ritual. Indigenous communities, fisherfolk, farmers, and workers should have meaningful participation, transparent information, fair compensation where necessary, and a genuine voice in decisions that may reshape their lives. Without that fairness, environmental policy ruins people’s expectations: they begin to suspect that “green development” means protecting landscapes for investors while asking ordinary families to carry the burden.

I also believe that progress must be measured by more than new buildings, higher visitor numbers, faster internet, or a rising gross domestic product. We should ask whether a project leaves rivers drinkable, coastlines living, workers secure, communities heard, and future generations with choices of their own. This requires governments to enforce environmental laws, businesses to account for ecological costs, and consumers—including me—to examine the convenience we purchase and the waste we leave behind. The necessary changes are many, but the principle is simple: no project should be called successful if it quietly consumes the conditions that make success possible.

What we need is neither a romantic refusal nor reckless expansion, but a more informed kind of development—one that uses science to understand limits, technology to reduce harm, and public policy to protect what markets routinely undervalue. I want roads, schools, hospitals, livelihoods, and inventions; I also want mangroves standing, birds returning, rivers breathing, and beaches that do not require emergency closure before we respect them. We can pursue economic and technological progress, but only with the unwavering understanding that nature is not the price of development—it is its foundation and its most profound testament.
