Meantime, residents in Jipapad town who have evacuated due to the severe flooding have returned to their respective houses on Christmas Day after the flood water subsided.
Since Friday (Dec.23), the town has experienced heavy downpour which resulted in flooding reaching up to the second floors of several houses causing the residents to flee their homes.

Most of these affected families took shelter at the municipal hall and to their relatives whose houses are located at higher grounds.

Vicky Abestros, municipal disaster risk reduction management officer, said that the families returned to their homes as early as 6 am as the flood water started to recede.

“But they celebrated the Christmas Eve inside the evacuation center where they were provided with foods by the local government unit. Some of them were able to prepare something to eat like pork, chicken and pancit,” she said.

Power supply was also restored at around 8 am, Abestros said.

“Hope we will have a good weather during the New Year’s celebration,” she said, noting that she had to be at the evacuation center during the Christmas celebration instead with her own family.

Cruise tour members receive assistance from DOT

0

TACLOBAN CITY – It was an early Christmas gift for the members of the Tour Guide, and Boat Operators for River Protection and Environmental Development Organization (Torpedo) after they received 10 motorboat engines from the Tourism Promotion Board (TPB), an attached agency of the Department of Tourism.

TPB head for the domestic promotions department Cesar Villanueva with DOT8 Regional Director Karina Rosa Tiopes turned over 10 motorboat engine to Torpedo members of Paranas, Samar.,

Torpedo members are boatmen, point men, and tour guides who are working at the extreme boat rides at the Ulot River in Paranas town, Samar.

Just like other tourist destinations, the extreme boat ride at the Ulot River was also suspended due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic which resulted for Torpedo members to lose income.

“We are still here despite of the pandemic. We are here to give our services to the tourists, for them to enjoy and for us to earn,” Eugene Igdameo, Torpedo president said.

“That is why, we are thankful to the TPB. We have been waiting for this for so long. This will help us earn more as tourists start going back to visiting destinations,” he added.

TPB head for the domestic promotions department Cesar Villanueva said that during their 2022 visit to the area, they learned that 60 percent of the Torpedo income goes to the owner of the 22 boats that they rent for the cruise rides.

Learning about this predicament of the Torpedo members, Villanueva said that he immediately made a decision to help them.

“There was a bit of delay because of the procurement process, but now the engine is here, I hope that you will use this properly,” Villanueva told to association members.

The turnover was also graced by Paranas Mayor Eunice Babalcon, Department of Tourism Regional Director Karina Rosa Tiopes, and Samar Tourism Officer Marvin Pecson, representing Governor Sharee Ann Tan.

Prior to the donation of the engines, a private company Taft Hydro Energy Corporation had already donated a boat to the organization August last year, according to Tiopes.

Torpedo members are one of the people’s organizations in Samar province that manages eco-tourism sites in their respective localities.

Leyte 4th DEO conducts gift-giving to less fortunate children, elderlies

0

ORMOC CITY-Christmas is most truly joyful and meaningful when we celebrate it by giving to those who are less fortunate.

Giving back to society is one of the customs practiced by the Leyte 4th District Engineering Office (DEO) as its employees did their share by contributing certain amounts from their own pockets to collect enough funds and buy supplies to be given away.

Continuing the tradition, the DEO brought joy to the Ormoc Holy Family Haven, Hayag Charitable Association – Hayag Receiving and Child Caring Home, Inc., and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) – Social Development for Children and Youth (SDCYY) on December 21, 2022.

District Engineer Arnaldo Bonifacio led the distribution of sacks of rice, food and kitchen needs, cleaning products, toiletries, vitamins and medicines, and other essentials to the children and elderly beneficiaries of the “Share-A-Joy” activity.

Through this program, the office hopes to inspire the spirit of giving and selflessness this holiday season, Bonifacio said.
