Education has always been regarded as the foundation of personal and societal growth. Yet, true education goes beyond the four walls of the classroom. It encompasses the holistic development of individuals—nurturing the mind, body, and spirit. In this context, sports play a crucial role, serving as a dynamic force that complements academic learning. The 2026 Local College Universities Athletic Association (LCUAA) meet in Ormoc provides a timely and powerful platform to highlight the indispensable role of sports in holistic education.
More than a couple of years back, Burauen Community College President Dr. Jett Quebec and Catbalogan City Community College President Dr.Nigel Cornejo together with this Public Servant had an AHA Moment. The College Presidents agreed to have a Friendly Games event like that of the Commonwealth Games and the State Colleges Universities Athletic Association Games. The idea was that it prods the Community Colleges to have an event that will showcase the Sports muscles of the Local Community College and gather moss of unity at the very least solidify the seemingly fragmented LUCs. It was about camaraderie and sports and also individual growth.
Beyond individual growth, sports foster social values that are essential in today’s interconnected world. Teamwork, collaboration, and empathy are cultivated through shared goals and collective effort. Leadership opportunities arise naturally in sports, allowing students to inspire and guide their peers. Moreover, sports instill values of fairness, respect, and integrity, which are cornerstones of responsible citizenship.
Academically, the benefits of sports are equally significant. Physical activity enhances concentration, memory, and cognitive performance, supporting students in their academic pursuits. The discipline required in athletics encourages time management, helping students balance their studies with extracurricular commitments. In this way, sports become a partner in academic success rather than a distraction.
After the soft yet historical hosting of the ALCU Friendship Games 2025, we are now facing a hyper competitive LCUAA 206 here in the city of beautiful people.
The LCUAA meet here now at Ormoc is not merely a competition; it is a celebration of holistic education. It showcases how athletics can shape well-rounded individuals who are prepared to contribute meaningfully to society. By framing the meet around the theme of sports as a pillar of holistic education, organizers can emphasize that true learning thrives not only in classrooms but also in the fields, courts.
From the mouth of Ormoc’s City Mayor Lucy Torres -Gomez, she said that it may be that the event entails cost but it ushers in happiness, teamwork resilience and promotes wellness.
Indeed, LCUAA 2026 had been just that and more!
