Cell

0

In lockup cells are those people who are deemed suspects of violating penal laws but before proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt after fair trial. But there are many who violate the law but remain free without worry as they have the power and influence to enjoy freedom and liberty owing to their linkage with those who can keep them so. A special class are those who are free despite conviction for crimes or felonies that are grave or heinous. These people remain out of cell, are called honorable and have good access to the powers that grant freedom and liberty. Some who violate the law are clever to avoid being nabbed. There are less fortunate people who are inside cells even if they are not violators or are merely accused of false charges on planted evidence.
In past days though, people are shivering in fear of a microorganism that reportedly destroys cells and causes death on people. The virus had caused unexplained instantaneous deaths among human beings. A sudden change in disposition had gone viral across several countries across the globe. The disease caused by the virus has been been kept secret in China, mainly from Wuhan and nearby localities. Information came in trickles, mostly emanating from the trolls, unreliable sites and accounts on social media. A lot of information are generated by just anyone and such unverified information had caused public speculations based on baseless inferences. Amidst the confusion, the virus keeps spreading to eventually conquer the whole world in a stealth manner.
It appears that the virus came out as a surprise to an unsuspecting people who woke up to the news about the disease caused by a virus named 2019 novel corona and later renamed 19 covid. The disease caused several deaths that were initially kept in wraps by China. Even the number of infected persons, persons under investigation, persons under monitoring and those who died due covid are not reported. The origin of the virus had long been identified but measures to contain the virus were cautiously implemented for fear of economic repercussions.
Government took too long to enforce preemptive measures to protect its citizens from the dreadful virus. Despite reports about persons entering the country from China that were found carrying the virus, government was tentative in banning flights from China. It was discovered later that flights were not suspended as only persons are banned from travelling into the country.
Only when deaths caused by covid were confirmed did government issued a national policy that imposed community quarantine. The executive order was a haphazard kneejerk reaction to an emergency. The issuance was perceived to cause social chaos as people will be restricted from travelling and working. The consequences upon those who are daily-wage earners who will suffer from loss of earnings. The quarantine was raised from community to an enhanced level that placed the entire Luzon in a huge cell.

Philippine cut flowers industry, its export potentials

0

My almost a decade stint in the Middle East, specifically in the Sultanate of Oman, had exposed me to knowing the potentials of Cut Flowers export to the M.E. countries. First hand info from OFWs working as Florist cum flower arranger in the Sultanate’s Palace, had it that fresh flowers as decorations inside the Palace functional halls, offices, and private rooms are replaced daily with newly arrived ones coming in crates from Holland. While the flowers bought regularly by the Sultanate were mostly from temperate plants, I still believe that our species of tropical flowers are much comparable in terms of variations in colors, shapes, and sizes. And price would be much cheaper if Philippine cut flowers are exported and find markets in the Middle East countries.
On several occasions that I was invited to attend events in the Palace, provided me first hand experience on how natural, fresh cut flowers are used to decorate the Palace and the houses of then Sultan Qaboos bin Said’s members of his official family. All flowers found in these places are imported mostly from Holland. It is very expensive to grow flowering plants in the M. E. but in green houses whose temperature needs to be maintained and watered using timed drip-method.
The discarded cut flowers are normally thrown to waste bins, but during my incumbency as Chair, Board of Directors, Philippine Community School (PCS) and the virtual ‘Head’ of the OFWs in the Sultanate, I would request the Filipino palace florist/arranger to keep the discarded flowers and donated to the PCS or save the same to decorate whenever there are activities at the Philippine Embassy or at least, as decors at times that the Filipino Community in Oman would have our own affairs.
Still a relatively small-time industry, but for cut flowers coming from the Mountain Provinces and dumped/retailed at the famed Dangwa’s Dapitan, Manila terminal, are nowhere to be found in bulk. Statistics coming from the small-scale Philippine Flower Industry show that from 1991 to 2000export sales “. . . of more than $170,000 or barely P18..87 million.”
Indeed, production falls short of the growing domestic demand on special occasions such as Valentine’s Day, Christmas and New Year, All saint’s Day, Birthdays, and on school graduation exercises. This situation gives no choice to flower entrepreneurs, but import flowers like gladioli, chrysanthemums, orchids – more often than not from Thailand.
To remedy the anemic flower production, Filipino farmers and horticulturists need to acquire pre- and post-harvest technologies, build more greenhouses to augment the low flower production in Batangas, Tagaytay and Bukidnon. Also, there are ‘cooler areas’ in the country, e.g. upland and/or mountain-located barangays which could be converted to flower farms. In Region 8, the mountains of Leyte (Burauen, Ormoc, Dagami, Jaro) plus the mountains bordering the three Provinces of Samar! In Burauen, cold-temperature veggies are grown luxuriantly and flowers are likely to thrive well, too!

Order more than ever

0

WITH all the rapid pace of the developments and the multiplying number of things grabbing our attention today, we really need to get hold of a stable foundation, something that offers an anchor or at least a rudder to maneuver ourselves with some sense of direction and purpose along the strong and confusing currents that mark our life today.
That is why we cannot overemphasize the need for the virtue of order that would give us the proper priorities that should guide our sense of direction and purpose. We have to concretize that virtue of order by specifying plans, strategies and structures that would make things clear to us as to what is most important and necessary in life, what should come first before anything else.
We have already been warned by Christ that what is most important is that we be saints, that we be as God wants us to be—his image and likeness, sharers of his divine life and nature.
“Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it,” he said. “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Mk 8,35-37)
With these words, we are given in general terms what is truly necessary for us, for which everything else would serve only as a means, an occasion or reason to achieve it.
Sad to say, there are some people, quite powerful and influential in their fields, who would disparage these words, saying that they just express some religious sentiments that have no practical and real value in life.
This is precisely the kind of attitude that undermines the virtue of order at the very root. To set aside the value of religion and our relation with God, or even just to look down on the role of faith, of things spiritual and supernatural, would already throw us into a world of disorder.
Let’s remember that everything comes from God and belongs to him. He is the one who sets the law and order in all his creation. We need to refer ourselves to him if we are to go along with what is proper in life, if we want to know what is true and false, what is good and evil, what the proper priorities are in our life.
So, we cannot exaggerate the need for certain practices that would always uphold the priority of the role of God in our life over everything else. A plan that would make us develop a growing intimacy with God as we immerse ourselves in our worldly and temporal affairs is, of course, a must.
It should be a plan that would include some moments of prayer and other practices that would sustain the constant presence of God in our daily routine like regular reading of the gospel, recourse to the sacraments, visits to the Blessed Sacrament, some devotions like the rosary and pilgrimages, etc.
It also would be helpful if we develop the habit of saying many aspirations or ejaculatory prayers during the day, and if we make use of human devices that would help us maintain presence of God and keep a supernatural outlook as we tackle all sorts of issues, challenges, trials, situations and predicaments in life.
It would be good if we set these practices in some clear structure or strategy so that even in the dizzying pace of our daily affairs, we would not get confused and much less, lost.
This virtue of order should be promoted relentlessly, especially today when it is most needed. It should be taught and inculcated in everyone as early as possible, and that means that right in our homes, the virtue should be lived and shown to edify everyone!

A plea to LMWD

0

While most areas of Tacloban City have had their water connections restored and functional after those days and weeks of being deprived of water supply due to some repairs effected by Leyte Metropolitan Water District (LMWD) along some pipelines, St. Anthony Subdivision, an area in Manlurip, San Jose this city has not had its normal water services back.
Yes, water flows out of the household faucets, but only in the middle of the nights when people are supposed to be sleeping. During daytime, when people in their homes are up and awake doing chores of various sorts, water, a basic necessity, is unavailable from their faucets, hence their difficulty to do normal operations. As a result, they are compelled to wait for water flow come night times, depriving themselves of enough sleep necessary for a healthy living just to be able to gather enough water that would suffice their need.
The fact that, somehow, they are able to avail of water supply does not justify the reality that they are deprived of normal water services from LMDW. It does not follow that, just because they still manage to stockpile water at nights, their problem need not be addressed anymore. Remember, lack of sleep could destroy one’s health if it becomes a permanent routine. These people making unnecessary vigils cannot also be sleeping during the day just to recover their missed sleeping time since they also have tasks to do during daytime.
The reason for this abnormal water flow is unclear. One thing is clear, though—the water flow is quite slow even at nights. It’s not something normal. Prior to the effected repairs, water was flowing abundantly through household pipelines. But after that, this precious commodity is no longer readily available. Again, one would have to agonize and battle with drowsiness just to get this precious thing.
Some are thinking that perhaps, there is leakage of water along the pipelines that carry the water supply to this subdivision, hence the absence of water during the day. Others allege that some people in the vicinity are using electric pumps to draw in water into their containers. Still others claim that, during daytime, water cannot flow into the area as a certain household at the entrance to the subdivision is accordingly engaged in a business that sells water to those in need, and this requires them to use a strong electric pump that siphons the water passing through the main pipeline that leads to this particular place.
Whatever is the reason behind, it is for LMWD to probe, to penalize violators. The people in the area are paying their water bills, yet the water services they receive are insufficient. The water management then should attend to this matter, with urgency, so as to help the affected residents with this undeserved agony. It is their plea that the management take an immediate action to resolve this problem as no other entities can help them out with this. It is LMWD’s sole responsibility, and the needed action should be effected soon before those people who deprive themselves of needed sleep develop serious ailments.

The World in Crisis

0

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has already spread worldwide. The disease originated from Wuhan, China and surprisingly, it spread its virus to practically, all areas of the world – in US, Europe and in Asia to include our own country.
As of the moment, no credible approach has been discussed to stop or control its dangerous attack to lives. It recognizes no particular race-it attacks anyone.
It is safe to say that the COVID-19 is dangerous to our world. It is a high time for us to seriously conduct personal or group, introspectively.
The world is God’s creation. All and anything in the world, especially nature, is provided by its maker-God- to the human being he created. But what have humans done? It abused the world. The powerful and rich have abused the poor and the downtrodden even the abused and the downtrodden have to a certain extent abused God by doing so many ungodly behavior.
So it is time for us to sit down and think. And the easy solution is to repent and go back to God, especially our leaders.
