Globe marks 8th consecutive year in FTSE4Good Index Series

Globe announces it has been included in the FTSE4Good Index Series, reflecting the organization’s continued dedication to implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices across its operations.

Created by global index and data provider FTSE Russell, the FTSE4Good Index Series is designed to measure the performance of companies demonstrating strong Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices. The FTSE4Good indexes are used by a wide variety of market participants to create and assess responsible investment funds and other products.

FTSE Russell evaluations are based on performance in areas such as Corporate Governance, Health and Safety, Anti-Corruption, and Climate Change. Businesses included in the FTSE4Good Index Series meet a variety of environmental, social and governance criteria.

Barangay secretary arrested in a buy-bust operation in Calbayog City

ORMOC CITY– A barangay secretary yielded an estimated 2 grams of suspected shabu with an estimated street value of P13,000 during a buy-bust operation led by personnel from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency(PDEA) together with City Drug Enforcement Team at about 12:59 pm Sunday(August 20) in Magsaysay Extension, Barangay Rawis, Calbayog City.

PDEA 8 Regional Director Gil Pabilona identified the suspect as Mark Ian Timan, 37, single, and a resident of Brgy. Palencia, Tarangnan, Samar.

He is listed as a high-valued individual on the drug watch list of both PDEA and the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Recovered from his possession was one sachet containing a white crystalline substance suspected to be shabu procured by an agent in the amount of P500.

During the conduct of a body search in front of village officials and a representative from the media, the searching agents recovered another one sachet containing the same white crystalline substance suspected to be shabu and one P500 bill.

Timan, who did not issue any statement on his arrest, was found to be in possession of alleged shabu weighting two grams with an estimated value amounting to P13,600.

Charges of violation of sections 5 (selling illegal drugs) and 11 (illegal possession of illegal drugs) of Article II of RA 9165, the Comprehensive Law against Illegal Drugs of 2002, were filed against the barangay secretary who is now detained at the Calbayog city police office.

DPWH completes sports coliseum’s stage in Lapinig Del Norte

NSSDEO, Brgy. Burabud, Laoang, N. Samar– Lapinignons in Barangay Lapinig Del Norte can now celebrate significant events through the effort of the Department of Public Works and Highways–Northern Samar Second District Engineering Office (DPWH-NSSDEO), headed by OIC-District Engineer Charlito S. Carlobos and OIC-Assistant District Engineer Atty. Arthur Eric L. Sabong, completion of the project, Construction of a Multi-Purpose Building (Sports Coliseum) in Barangay Lapinig Del Norte, Lapinig, Northern Samar.

The aforementioned project was funded under the General Appropriations Act (GAA) of 2022 with a contract amount of P 9,750,742.79 intended for the complete construction of the Sports Coliseum’s Stage including the removal of the existing stage, reinforced concrete works, and finishing works (Masonry, Fabricated material installations, Painting, Metal Structure Framing, and Roofing) which was undertaken by JUPA Construction.

In order to guarantee the construction method and adherence to the quality standards of the Department, the NSSDEO top management assigned technical personnel to supervise and monitor the project. Thus, Project Engineer Bryan M. Fortes, for the supervision to assure accuracy, proper resources, and quality of project from start to finish, assisted by Resident Engineer Ryan S. Vestra. Whereas, Materials Engineer Justino E. Serafin, Jr. laid his expertise to identify and recommend appropriate materials intended for the project.

This sports coliseum stage is now a venue to cater various to events of Brgy. Lapinig Del Norte. Furthermore, the project will be a means to attract the community’s attention and maximize the positive effect since it also has electrical system for convenient access to sound and lighting.

DOST extended funding to DOT to promote science tourism in Leyte

TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in the region has downloaded a fund to the Department of Tourism (DOT) for the implementation or establishment of a science tourism initiative in Leyte.

The fund, worth P175,000 was turned over by the DOST-8 Regional Director Ernesto Granada and Leyte provincial director John Glenn Ocaña to DOT-8 led by chief tourism operations officer Catherina Apostol.

“The proposed project aims to establish a science tourism industry for a wider appreciation of science, technology, and innovation through tourism,” Apostol said.

She added that the DOT-8 will be spearheading the creation of a science tourism network that will showcase local science and technology-themed tourist destinations.

Among the identified science and technology-themed tourist destinations are the Eastern Visayas Science Centrum, in Palo; coffee processing facility in Tongonan, Ormoc City; Baybay sweet potato ice cream facility in Baybay City; the Eastern Visayas food innovation center; the laboratory and technology building of the Philippine Science High School – Eastern Visayas Campus, the Ormoc City Museum, and the Radar dome of Pagasa.

Also included are the outstanding small enterprise technology upgrading program SETUP), GIA, community empowerment thru science and technology, and iSTART projects, and industrial plants like Philippine Associated Smelting and Refining Corp.(Pasar), Energy Development Corporation, SC Global, SPMI, and others.

Visiting this site allows tourists to experience Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) through educational tourism by means of visual and experiential learning by letting them learn it on hand.

As part of the preparation, a visit to the identified sites will be conducted by the DOT to conduct a workshop on how to develop a tourism product or package which eventually will be used to conceptualize a tour program.

Visits to the sites will start either in September or October.

“This project will generally promote science and technology, and increase the number of tourists, particularly in the province of Leyte, boost the engagement of local tourism stakeholders and enterprises, further promote science and technology as a career path of students,” DOST Director Granada said.

He also expressed his gratitude to the tourism department for collaborating with their office that will become an avenue for innovation, learning, and exploration that will not only contribute to inclusive and sustainable development but will also benefit the environment through conservation and protection, and human resources of the region.

Ex-rebel surrender led to discovery cache of firearms

LAS NAVAS, NORTHERN SAMAR – On August 17, 2023, Benie Alegria, also known as Olsen or Yahoo, and identified as the secretary of section committee 1, front committee 1, sub-regional committee emporium of Cluster 1, voluntarily surrendered to the troops of the 3rd Infantry (Regardless of What) Battalion through the intercession of Mayor Arlito A. Tan of this town.

Algeria, a resident of Brgy, Epaw, had been lying low since February 2023. A day after a tactical interview, he revealed the location of an arms cache, consisting of two M16A1 rifles and 14 bottles of IV dextrose fluid.

The recovery was led by 1Lt Ron Ryan Pilapil, the commanding officer of Bravo Company, along with the team of Northern Samar Police Mobile Force led by Police Staff Sergeant Japeth Esquillo.

The surrender was a result of the joint efforts of the unit’s tactical, operational, and civil-military operations through the Modified Community Service Support Teams (MCSST) deployed in the area.

Troops engaged in various activities, including massive loudspeaker operations (panawagan), installation of tarpaulins, distribution of leaflets, face-to-face dialogues, and pulong-pulong sessions.

Alegria’s decision to prioritize the well-being of his family over personal grievances demonstrates his leadership qualities. His actions stand as an inspiration for others who may find themselves caught in similar circumstances, reminding us of the transformative potential of peaceful resolutions.

Mayor Arlito Tan expressed his satisfaction with the unit’s success. He emphasized the positive impact of the army’s efforts to maintain peace in his municipality and extended immediate assistance to Benie and his family.

“The surrender of a former NPA member showcases the government’s determination to end insurgency. The local government of Las Navas is open to welcoming those who wish to return to the fold of the government,” he said.

Lt. Col. Isidro D. Vicente, the commanding officer of the 3rd I, commended the exceptional performance of the troops in the area.

He emphasized that Alegria’s surrender was made possible by the dedication and hard work of the troops, and this success benefits not only the military but also the affected family and community. He rallied the troops to continue their mission with unwavering commitment. “Kudos to all the efforts,” Lt. Col. Vicente stressed.

“This accomplishment is a testament to the 3rd Infantry Battalion’s dedication to duty. The community’s support was also vital and deeply appreciated, as it reflects their eagerness to end conflict within their vicinity,” he said.(PR)

TACLOBAN CITY – After the successful staging last year, the city government of Catbalogan brought back the ‘Karisyuhan han Kakalsahan’ Manaragat Night Parade as part of the major activities for the 20th Manaragat Festival.

The 20th Manaragat Festival is part of the several activities prepared by the city government through its tourism and information offices as part of its annual fiesta in honor of its patron saint St. Bartholomew the Apostle held every August 24.

The competition was joined by seven clustered offices and six clustered villages in the city.
They showcased colorful and lively underwater life through parade gimmicks and illuminated floats featuring local fishes and shells that are found in the seawaters of the Samar provincial capital.

Winners in the festival float competitions were the Lawayan cluster of the City Legal and City Treasurer’s Office (2nd runner-up), Pakul cluster of the City Health Office and City Veterinary Office (1st runner-up), and the Lambiaw cluster of the Sangguniang Panlungsod office and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office as champion.

For the parade gimmick barangay category, the Bukawil cluster bagged the 1st place, while the Karang-karang cluster was awarded as champion.

For the Manaragat Festival grand showdown, which was temporarily stopped by the city government in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Samar National High School emerged as champion winning P200,000.

The Manaragat Festival showdown this year featured folk dances anchored on the theme “Katawhan Katbalogan: Dancing the Waves of Change”.

Samar National High School won the best in musicality and best in costume awards, winning cash prize of P20,000.

The Guinsorongan National High School bagged the 1st runner-op winning P100,000, and the Catbalogan Comprehensive National High School that presented “An Marul” was in 2nd place and won P75,000.
