Floods

AL ELLEMA
AL ELLEMA

These are rainy days and we do not know how many people are well prepared for it. We have seen the devastation of many farms that were hit by the floods. The destruction of crops will surely affect food supply in the next few months. We cannot expect too much come harvest time as many of our plants, especially rice which is our staple food, had been washed by the heavy rains and floods. There still will be harvest time no matter what, but the produce of our farms will surely be lean as plants were inundated. Rice that already started bearing healthy grains were suddenly washed out by the floods.

If these are lean months where the supply of rice is low, causing prices of our staple food to rise almost on a daily basis, much more crisis is coming in the aftermath of the torrential rains. People must face the reality of an impending food shortage due mainly to the destruction of many plants, rice above all. But with the current crisis we are in, it is quite difficult for many people to save enough for the leaner months that is sure to come. While we can foresee the effects of the flood that hit the region, many will be unable to find means to prepare for such impending shortages in the supply of food and other basic needs.

We truly need to revive the basic lessons demonstrated by ants, that small creature that shows unparalleled industry and diligence in gathering enough stocks for the rainy days. It is truly unfortunate that we tend to conveniently forget such lessons, setting on a happy-go-lucky lifestyle, if not total laziness to gather enough for the occurrence of rainy days. We have so much time to produce the basic needs we need during better times of the year. Unfortunately, we prefer to enjoy the times of bountiful harvest without saving enough for the days when we cannot earn due to the rains.

It is sometimes awesome to observe our penchant to just keep singing in the rain. We tend to enjoy the moment by spending instead of saving every extra penny from our hard-earned money. This is evident in the proliferation of machines that our people love to croon to while away their time in the guise of leisure after work. We are caught with our inclination to be happy by our manifest preference for the videoke that eats money than buying tools of trade that produces money. These are fundamental reasons why we often fell yawning with empty bellies during rainy days and floods.

Riding on the popularity of a celebrity truly has a strong impact on a brand. This article delves into the various ways in which celebrity endorsement shapes consumer perception and drives consumer behavior.

Are we alone?

There are hundreds of structures made in the ancient times but cannot be replicated today, in spite of advanced technology that we have.

Are we alone in this wide cosmos? For centuries we were told that we are. It seems that we are special and we are the only living race inhabiting the Earth or any Planet. Lately, these was proven to be false and that after all these years we were actually wrong.

People have pondered whether or not there are other intelligent beings in the universe for a very long time. One of science and exploration’s most exciting and contentious projects has been the search for extraterrestrial life. However, certain shocking findings in recent years have questioned our preconceived notions and raised the possibility that there may be other life forms present in this huge universe besides ourselves.

One of the most intriguing findings was the detection of a mysterious object that entered our solar system in 2017, named ‘Oumuamua. This object, which was dubbed a “scout” from the Hawaiian language, had a very unusual shape, size, and trajectory. It was also moving at an extremely high speed, faster than any known asteroid or comet. Moreover, it seemed to be propelled by an unknown force, as if it had some kind of engine or sail. Some astronomers have speculated that ‘Oumuamua could be an artificial probe sent by an alien civilization to explore our region of space1.

Another shocking revelation was the presentation of alleged alien remains in the Mexican parliament in 2023. A group of lawmakers claimed that they had obtained several specimens of humanoid creatures that were found in different locations in Mexico and Peru. They said that these beings had three fingers on each hand, elongated heads, and unusual internal organs. They also showed X-ray images that supposedly revealed the presence of eggs, ovaries, and implants made of rare metals in some of the bodies. They argued that these creatures were not related to any known life form on Earth, and that they were evidence of extraterrestrial visitation.

A third remarkable discovery was the observation of a potential ocean world orbiting a nearby star called K2-18. Using the powerful Webb Telescope, astronomers detected signs of water vapor, methane, and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of this planet, which is about 17% larger than Earth. These are some of the key ingredients for life as we know it, and they suggest that this planet could have a liquid water ocean beneath its clouds. This would make it one of the most promising candidates for hosting alien life in our galaxy4.
These three examples are just some of the many indications that we are not alone in the universe, and that aliens may have already visited or even inhabited our planet. The implications of these findings are profound and far-reaching. They challenge our assumptions about our place and role in the cosmos, and raise new questions about our origins, history, and destiny. They also invite us to rethink our relationship with other forms of life, both on Earth and beyond. How should we react to the reality of alien life on Earth? How should we communicate and interact with them? How should we protect ourselves and our planet from potential threats or conflicts? These are some of the questions that we need to address as we face this new era of discovery and exploration.

“My kingdom is not of this world”

WORDS of Christ in response to Pilate’s question, “Art thou the king of the Jews?” (Jn 18,33) That was when Christ clarified who he really was, and yet the poor Pilate and many of the Jews of that time could not get it.

These words are part of the gospel reading for the last Sunday of the liturgical year which is dedicated to Christ as King, the real King. (cfr. Jn 18,33-37) They remind us that our kingdom is not in this world. It is where Christ as our true King is—that is, in heaven from where we really originated and to where we are supposed to be destined in our definitive state of life.

These words remind us that our earthly life is a test whether what God wants us to be—that is, to be his image and likeness, sharers of his divine life and nature—is also what we ourselves would want to be. This test actually takes place every moment of our earthly life. We are made to choose whether we would like to be with God through Christ who is the “way, the truth and the life”, or to be by ourselves only.

We should always be aware of this test and should try our best to make the proper choice, avoiding getting lost and swallowed up by the drama of our life here on earth. And so, we should sharpen our awareness of the real purpose of our life here on earth as we go through the varying situations, conditions and circumstances of our life.

We should be excited and eager to reach our real destination. And reaching it should not be a problem since we have been given all the means to achieve it. What can help is that at the end of each day, we remind ourselves of the real end and purpose of our life, and then examine ourselves how we are doing to approach that end.

We should develop a keen send of the real end and purpose of our life. This is unavoidable and indispensable. Even in our ordinary affairs, we take it for granted that we ought to have some idea of the end or purpose in mind before we move.

There should be at least the sensation that we are getting nearer it, knowing that one day more or one year more in our life is actually one day less or one year less in our life too. We should just be ready since we would not know when the zero-balance of this consequential equation would take place.

To get the sensation that we are getting closer to our final destination means that we are realizing that we are becoming more and more like Christ, who is the pattern of our humanity and the savior of our damaged humanity. He should be the king, the everything for us.

Thus, we have to learn how to submit everything to him, especially our inmost self—the heart, the will and mind together with the emotions, feelings, etc. That is how we make Christ our king.

We are supposed to be ‘alter Christus,’ the goal and ideal that is meant for us, though we need also to do our part, free beings as are, to achieve that status. God, our Creator and Father, wants us to be that way, though he does not impose it on us without our consent that should also be shown with deeds and not just with intentions or words.

NPA arrested, firearms recovered by government troops in the wake of a clash in N. Samar

TACLOBAN CITY– A member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was captured during a military operation conducted by government troopers in Barangay Malidong, Gamay, Northern Samar, on Monday, November 18, 2024.

The operation, made by the members of the 52nd Infantry Battalion, was initiated following reports from a concerned citizen regarding sightings of rebel members armed with firearms, allegedly engaging in extortion activities in the area.

This information came after a previous encounter on November 12.

The captured individual, known by the alias “Ahon,” was identified as the vice squad leader of the Regional Guerrilla Unit (RGU) under the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC). Authorities seized a firearm in his possession during the operation.

In a separate incident, the 20th IB engaged in a clash with around 10 rebel members while conducting military operations in Barangay C.M. Recto, Catubig, also in Northern Samar.
The encounter resulted in the confiscation of three high-powered firearms, assorted ammunition, medical supplies, and personal belongings.

Lt. Col. Richard Villaflor, commanding officer of the 20th IB, praised the troops for their swift and decisive action, which forced the CTGs to retreat.

“This incident reaffirms our commitment to dismantling threats to peace and urges remaining CTG members to surrender and participate in the government’s reintegration programs. Together, we can build a peaceful and progressive Northern Samar,” he said in a statement.

Major General Adonis Ariel Orio, commander of the 8th Infantry Division based in Catbalogan City, Samar, commended the success of the operations and highlighted the critical role of civilian cooperation in combating insurgency in the region
“The support and information provided by the public are instrumental in ensuring the success of our military operations. We remain resolute in our mission to end the criminal activities and violence perpetrated by these groups. We will continue our efforts until their complete defeat,” he said in another statement.

Maj. Gen. Orio also called on remaining NPA members to take advantage of the government’s amnesty program, providing an opportunity to reintegrate into society and pursue peaceful, productive lives.

The government’s existing amnesty program, available to members of the communist NPA members, is overseen by the National Amnesty Commission (NAC).

Established by Executive Order No. 125, series of 2021, and amended by EO 47 of 2023, the program offers amnesty, potentially extinguishing criminal liability for acts committed by recipients, though they may still face civil liability for damages caused to private individuals.

DAVAO CITY – Fifteen years after the Ampatuan massacre, 24 journalists from the Visayas visited the massacre site in Sitio Masalay, Maguindanao del Sur, to honor the victims of the tragic event on Thursday, Nov. 21.

The group participated in “Inside BARMM: A Walk Through Bangsamoro Moro,” an immersion program organized by the Mindanao Institute for Journalism. Journalists from MindaNews also joined the commemoration.

The participants offered prayers, reflections, candles, and flowers at the hilly site, calling for justice for the 58 victims who perished on November 23, 2009, in pre-election violence orchestrated by the Ampatuan family.

Among the victims were 32 journalists, making it the deadliest attack on media workers in history.

The journalists emphasized the need for continued legal action as some suspects remain at large. They also reflected on the pain and unresolved struggles endured by the families of the victims.

The massacre occurred during the filing of the certificate of candidacy (CoC) of Esmael Mangudadatu, who was challenging Andal Ampatuan Sr. for the gubernatorial post. Civilians unaffiliated with the convoy were also killed in the attack.

The event highlighted the ongoing fight for justice and press freedom, honoring the lives lost in one of the darkest chapters of Philippine history.
