TACLOBAN CITY – The Archbishop of Palo has called on the faithful to pray for the immediate recovery of Pope Francis, the only Pontiff to have ever visited Eastern Visayas.
Archbishop John Du issued an open letter to the faithful through the archdiocese’s social media account on Monday, Feb. 24, urging continued prayers for the Holy Father, who remains in critical condition at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

“As the doctors addressed the media and declared that ‘he is not out of danger,’ we continue to pray for the well-being of Pope Francis,” Archbishop Du said.

“Our continued prayers and Masses offered for his health and well-being are our powerful way of showing our love for the Holy Father,” he added.

The archbishop reminded the faithful of Pope Francis’ historic visit to Leyte on Jan. 17, 2015, when he personally consoled survivors of Super Typhoon ‘Yolanda’ (Haiyan), which devastated the region on Nov. 8, 2013.

“In the Archdiocese of Palo, we remember how Pope Francis brought a profound sense of hope and solidarity to our communities affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan,” Du said.

“His presence as the Vicar of Christ served as a powerful symbol of God’s mercy and compassion, reminding us that we are not alone in our collective efforts of healing and rebuilding,” he added.

During his visit, the Pope presided over a Mass in Tacloban attended by more than 200,000 people despite a typhoon that was hitting the province at the time. He also visited the Palo Cathedral and met with families affected by Yolanda.

Meanwhile, the Archdiocese of Palo has denied rumors circulating on social media that the Pope has passed away.

Fr. Chris Arthur Militante, the archdiocese’s information officer, dismissed the claims as “fake news” and urged the public to refer only to official sources such as the Vatican News for updates on the Pope’s condition.

“Let us pray, but also never forget that we are but temporary in this world, and our true home and happiness await with God,” Militante said.

“We will all die, and the Pope is not exempted,” he added.

According to the Vatican, Pope Francis, 88, is being treated for double pneumonia and early kidney failure, requiring high-flow oxygen therapy.

Despite his serious health issues, he has remained alert and communicative, attending Mass and expressing gratitude for the global outpouring of prayers and support.

On orders of US Pres. Trump

TACLOBAN CITY – A climate resilience project in Borongan City led by the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is facing uncertainty after former U.S. President Donald Trump ordered a 90-day freeze on foreign aid, affecting the operations of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

“It’s unfortunate that our partner, CRS, is affected by this development, as all USAID programs have been suspended,” said Borongan City Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda.

“CRS has been our long-time partner, and we have collaborated on many initiatives. That’s why we are saddened by this, especially since it is a very good program,” he added.
Borongan is one of the beneficiaries of the Climate Resilient Cities program funded by USAID, along with Batangas, Cotabato, Iloilo, Legazpi, and Zamboanga.

The project aims to enhance climate adaptation, promote nature-based solutions, utilize climate data for planning, and ensure the sustainability of resilience-building efforts.
The five-year initiative, which began in 2022, is being implemented by CRS in partnership with the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation, Conservation International, and the Rocky Mountain Foundation.

As Borongan is highly vulnerable to climate-related hazards such as typhoons and flooding, Mayor Agda stressed the project’s significance in helping local governments develop effective resilience strategies with guidance from experts.

“This is a great program that benefits many, especially local government units (LGUs) that are just starting but are determined and willing to work and learn. Being a local chief executive is a learning process—if you don’t study, you will be left behind because there are many outstanding LGUs out there,” he emphasized.

The mayor expressed hope that Trump would reconsider his decision, emphasizing that USAID funding has helped millions worldwide, not just in climate resilience projects but also in humanitarian aid and health programs.

Earlier, an official of Tacloban City has also disclosed that two of projects funded by the US government through USAID were also cancelled due to this freeze order of Trump.

These projects include Urban Connect focuses on urban development and management, while the CHANGE program aims to strengthen democratic governance by making local government units more responsive, transparent, and accountable with the participation of civil society groups.

Both programs, which began in 2023, are set to run for five years.

TACLOBAN CITY – The mayors of Dolores and Can-avid, both in Eastern Samar, have expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to provide playing venues and billeting areas for the 2025 Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA), hosted by the Department of Education (DepEd) Eastern Samar Division.

Can-avid Mayor Vilma Germino highlighted the significance of this collaboration, emphasizing that co-hosting the athletes with Dolores is a testament to the strong partnership between their municipalities.

“We are very happy to assist the host municipality of Dolores to ensure the success of this momentous occasion,” she said during the opening ceremony.

Can-avid has prepared four billeting sites for EVRAA athletes and playing venues for futsal, table tennis, and softball. Meanwhile, Dolores hosts events for billiards, boxing, sepak takraw, and baseball.

Mayor Germino assured that all delegations are safe and well-supported, with medical assistance readily available through the Can-avid Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and the Can-avid Municipal Hospital.

Dolores Mayor Rodrigo Rivera, in his address welcoming the 13 delegations, expressed deep gratitude to groups and individuals who contributed to the success of their hosting.
Despite challenges, including the lack of support from some municipal officials who did not approve their request for funding, they successfully pulled through.

“Not all our requests for EVRAA hosting were approved due to budget and resource constraints, but we made sure that everything was well-prepared to make this EVRAA meet a success,” Mayor Rivera said.

The mayors credited the success of the event to the support of the Dolores Municipal Police, the Philippine Army, barangay officials and community volunteers, parents, LGU staff, and DepEd personnel, who all played crucial roles in preparing the billeting and playing areas.

Mayor Rivera also extended his thanks to Governor Ben Evardone and House Minority Floor Leader 4Ps Partylist Representative Marcelino Libanan for their support in making the event possible.

Eastern Samar hosts the first of the three legs of EVRAA 2025.

The second leg will be held in Maasin City from February 27 to March 2, featuring competitions in arnis, badminton, basketball, chess, football, pencak silat, volleyball, and wushu.

The final leg will take place in Tacloban City from March 6 to 9, covering archery, athletics, dance sports, gymnastics, special games, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, and wrestling.
