The toughness of Christian love

0

THAT toughness comes from the supernatural grace of God. It is not just a human love, based only on natural forces, principles and motives which, given our wounded condition, are always hounded by our infranatural tendencies toward envy, anger, hatred, jealousy and the like.

Christian love does not suppress what is human and natural in us. It simply elevates and purifies it. And as such it can manage to have a universal scope that can include even loving our enemies.

It is this love that, as St. Paul said, would enable us to be all things to all men (cfr. 1 Cor 9,22), allowing us to adapt ourselves to all kinds of people, situations and conditions.

Indeed, St. Paul made this beautiful hymn of Christian love when he said: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (1 Cor 13,4-7)

Christ, of course, is the very embodiment of this kind of love, and all the saints and the holy men and women through the ages have tried to live by this standard. We too are asked to have this kind of love, since Christ clearly told us to love one another as he himself has loved us. (cfr. Jn 13,34)

We need to be strong and tough, first of all, because our life will always involve, if not, require nothing less than continuing effort and struggle. Christ himself said it clearly: “From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and men of violence take it by force.” (Mt 11,12)

This is because there are goals and challenges to reach. And they are not merely natural, social or human goals. They are spiritual and supernatural that obviously need both grace and nothing less than our all-out effort.

Besides, given our wounded human condition, there obviously are problems and difficulties to face, temptations and consequences of our sins, mistakes and failures. There will always be issues that we need to resolve.

This is not to mention that each one of us has his own personal weaknesses to tackle. Everyone is prone to laziness and complacency, to narrow-mindedness and shortsightedness, if not blindness to spiritual and supernatural realities, all of which can lead to complications in our life.

We have to deal with the concupiscence of the eyes and the flesh, the pride of life, our tendency to be vain and self-centered, and to be dominated by the urges of lust and sensuality, greed and avarice, gluttony, and the many other disordinate passions we have.
We have to know the peculiarities of our emotional and psychological make-up, so we can be prepared to deal with the ups and downs of our life, twists and turns of life’s drama that can lead us to wild mood swings and to more serious conditions like falling into bipolar and similar mental and emotional illnesses.

This is not to mention that we have to learn how to cope with the consequences of the other extreme of committing mistakes and sins, suffering defeat, being a failure that can plunge us to depression, self-pity and despair. Or the sweet poison of success that can spoil us.

Let’s never forget that we also have to deal with spiritual and supernatural enemies of our soul. We are actually ranged against powerful spiritual enemies. We really need the toughness of Christian love to live our life properly.

DOT taps local flavors to boost food tourism in Eastern Visayas

0

TACLOBAN CITY — The Department of Tourism(DOT) in the region is ramping up its efforts to spotlight the region’s rich culinary heritage by weaving native dishes into travel itineraries and strengthening partnerships with the private sector.

DOT-8 Regional Director Karina Rosa Topes said in an interview that the agency is taking a more strategic approach to food tourism, recognizing that local cuisine plays a vital role in enhancing the overall visitor experience. She noted that tourist arrivals have already reached 1.6 million in 2024, signaling robust interest in the region.

“When you visit a place, the first thing you ask is, ‘Where do we stay?’ But after that, the next question is always, ‘Where do we eat?’ Local food enhances the tourism industry,” Topes said.

Although food tourism is not yet tracked separately in official data, she emphasized that local cuisine is deeply embedded in nearly all tourism activities across Eastern Visayas. Food may not be classified as a standalone attraction, she explained, but it is a natural and essential part of the travel experience.

Tiopes urged event organizers and local businesses to serve native dishes, especially during functions attended by visitors from outside the region. This practice, she said, not only introduces guests to Eastern Visayas’ unique flavors but also reinforces regional identity.
“We’ve been encouraging our partners in the private sector—especially for seminars and events with participants from outside Region 8—to let guests experience something that is truly ours,” she added.

To ensure a positive dining experience, DOT-8 regularly conducts food hygiene and safety training for local vendors and tourism stakeholders. These sessions cover proper food handling, preparation, and quality control to prevent food-related incidents.

In addition, the agency is helping local culinary talents level up their skills through a series of specialized workshops. These include training on traditional street food, modern fusion cuisine, and other culinary styles aimed at expanding the appeal of local fare to a broader audience.

“We have a variety of culinary trainings—street food, fusion cuisine, and more. We’re also actively linking local food providers with private sector opportunities to promote their offerings,” Tiopes said.

Under its tourism branding campaign “Infinite Escapes,” the region has launched “Infinite Eats,” a food-focused initiative designed to showcase the distinctive tastes of Eastern Visayas—from humble street snacks to heirloom recipes passed down through generations.
By making food a central element of its tourism strategy, DOT-8 hopes to position the region as a must-visit destination not just for its natural beauty and history, but also for its unforgettable flavors.

TACLOBAN CITY – The new Tacloban Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport terminal building will be opened partially by 2026 as part of the long-term goal to meet international standards, officials said on Wednesday.

The construction of the three phases of the project is now in full swing after the Regional Development Council (RDC) initiated problem-solving sessions and intensified its regular monitoring, said Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) Regional Director Meylene Rosales.

“In the past few months, the contractors have been true to their promise to fast-track the project. This is a result of intensified monitoring of the RDC Regional Project Monitoring Committee and the Office of House Speaker Martin Romualdez,” Rosales told the Philippine News Agency.

The key components of the project include the construction of the New Passenger Terminal Building Phase I, the Tacloban Airport Development Project Phase 2, the construction of the Passenger Terminal Building Phase III, and the construction of airport facilities.

Substantially completed is the PHP761.91 million works under Phase 1. The second phase of the new passenger terminal building, with a PHP1.05 billion budget, is up for completion in early 2026. Ongoing works include roofing and architectural works.

The first two phases are funded by the Department of Transportation.

With the expected completion of PHP1.5 billion for Phase 3 and other airport facilities, the terminal building will be opened for domestic flights in 2026.

The third phase, funded by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), includes work on embankments, waterproofing, tile installation, painting, air-conditioning systems, installation of elevators and escalators, and passenger boarding bridges.

“We are fast-tracking the third phase of the project since we want to partially open the terminal by 2026. We are progressing ahead of schedule with actual accomplishments significantly exceeding planned targets,” DPWH Regional Director Edgar Tabacon said in a phone interview.

The Tacloban Airport Development is a flagship project of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., which aims to transform the airport into an international gateway by 2028.

The airport at the city’s San Jose district is one of the country’s busiest, with 24 daily flights between Manila and Cebu, with 1.69 million inbound and outbound passengers in 2024.
Named after Daniel Z. Romualdez, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, the airport serves as the main gateway from Manila and Cebu to Eastern Visayas. (PNA)
