2 fishermen rescued off the waters in Southern Leyte

TACLOBAN CITY– Two fishermen were rescued after their motorboat was capsized off the waters of Libagon, Southern Leyte on Saturday early morning.

Rescued were Elajo Encluna,64, and Paul Bayron,61, both residents of Barangay Tigbao of the said town, whose motorboat capsized off the waters due to the heavy rains and big winds, the Coast Guard based in Maasin City, also in Southern Leyte, said.

The fishermen left their village on Friday at 11 pm but encountered the bad weather Saturday at about 2 am, the Coast Guard added.

The report added that the two fishermen tried to paddle their motorboat and drifted, reaching the coast of Brgy. Ilag, also in the same town.

Fortunately, the two were sighted by a passing motorboat which immediately sought for assistance from the local police and Coast Guard.

Cafgu member shot dead by a village exec in Calbayog City

ORMOC CITY– A member of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (Cafgu) was shot dead by a village official in Calbayog City on Saturday (Jan. 21).

Reports reaching the regional Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters based in Palo, Leyte, disclosed that the victim, Crisanto Domayan, 57, was shot dead by Noli Sameniano in P-5 Barangay Himalandrog, a remote village in Calbayog City at about 6:40 am.

Report said that the victim armed with bolo locally known as “sundang,” tucked in his waist, and with a homemade shotgun locally known as “Doble Zero” had gone berserk and roamed the village, challenging anyone for a fight.

He then proceeded to the house of Sameniano, who at that time, was attending to the wake of his wife.

Sameniano got an unknown firearm and shot the victim several times which caused his immediate death.

Police operatives are now conducting a manhunt operation against Sameniano who fled after the incident. (ROBERT DEJON)

Septuagenarian burned to death in Borongan City

ORMOC CITY-A septuagenarian woman who was living alone in her house was killed after a fire consumed her house in Barangay San Gabriel, Borongan City on Saturday (Jan.21).

Investigation conducted by the local police disclosed that the victim, identified as Josefina Arre and suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

The police said that the 1:10 am fire spread as the house was made of light materials. The fire, however, did not affect other houses as the fire personnel with the help of the residents arrived on time.

The fire was declared out at around 01:40 am.

During clearing operations, the local fire bureau found the charred body of the victim under several debris. (ROBERT DEJON)

DPWH-NSFDEO top officials inspected the damaged road slope protection in Lope de Vega Northern Samar

Catarman, Northern Samar– Top officials led by District Engineer Mario D. Villena of the Department of Public Works and Highways Northern Samar First DEO inspected the reported damaged road slope protection in Brgy. Magsaysay, Lope De Vega Northern Samar (K0783+500) along Catarman-Calbayog Road (S00050SM).

DE Villena was accompanied by Assistant District Engineer Vivian G. Biaco and Acting Maintenance Chief Engineer Dahlia T. De Asis to oversee the extent damaged road slope by incessant rains caused by low pressure area.

The reported damaged road slope protection has a total estimated length of 160meters with an estimated amount of Php 140M.

District Engineer Mario D. Villena immediately directed the Maintenance Engineer to submit report to the regional and Central office and request for appropriate funding for the immediate repair/rehabilitation of the said area.

“The road section is now vulnerable with higher risk of being totally cut-off if the collapsed slope protection is not reconstructed immediately,” said DE Villena.

For the meantime, the maintenance section installed road safety devices, barriers/signages to caution the travelling public in traversing said road section for their safety.

DOLORES, Eastern Samar – Police Regional Office 8 Regional Director B/Gen Rommel Francisco Marbil bestowed the ‘Gawad Medalya ng Kagalingan’ to the police chief of this town and two of his men for their apprehension of a drug personality.

Awarded by Marbil on Monday (Jan.23) were town police chief Maj. Arthur Daiz, and his men Msg. Romeo Dolio Jr., and Pat. Randy Gulferic.

The local personnel successfully apprehended an illegal drugs suspect operating in the municipality December of last year.

A sachet of illegal drugs and mark money were confiscated from the suspect.

Eastern Samar Police Provincial Office Director Col. Matthe Aseo and Mayor Rodrigo Rivera witnessed the awarding.

B/Gen Marbil lauded the police officer in performing their duty to address criminality problems particularly on illegal drugs in the municipality.

“This award is bestowed to our policemen who are performing their duty for the safety and benefit of the community,” the police regional director said.

“I’m very proud that our police are performing their duty very well,” Marbil added.

Mayor Rivera, for his part, expressed his gratefulness to the PNP for always being ready to assist the LGU in times of need.

“Thank you sir, because we no longer need to ask help from them like in the recent flooding,” Rivera said.

Dolores like most parts of the province suffered massive flooding early this month with police personnel among those who rendered assistance to the affected families.
