TACLOBAN CITY –Five scholar-athletes from the Leyte Sports Academy (LSA) made a good mark during the recently concluded Asian Power Lifting Championship held in Hong Kong.

The LSA athletes, who are part of the Philippine powerlifting team, gained one gold and four silver medals in five different weight classes. Rowella Abrea, 16 years old from Matag-ob town in Leyte, won the gold in the 52kg women’s sub-junior when she lifted a total of 302.5 kg and was named the Asian sub-junior best lifter. Meanwhile, Angela Alferez, 15, and Veronica Ompod,15, both from Matag-ob; Marielle Liwanag, 14 of Carigara and Kenneth John Bais, 17 of Dagami, all won silver medals in their respective weight classes.

The LSA power lifters made a courtesy call last Monday (August 17) to Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla who said that he is proud of the achievements made by the sports-scholars of LSA, a sports facility run by the provincial government. Petilla said this is a sports program that the province will continue to nurture and grow so that Leyte’s young sports goldmines will be given opportunities to compete, both in the national and international competitions. He assured that all the athletes will be given all the support to enhance their talents. The Asian Power Lifting Championship was organized by the Asian Power Lifting Federation and was held at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Hong Kong held last July 20 to 26. A total of 290 athletes from 18 countries competed in the event.
