TACLOBAN CITY — The local government of Carigara in Leyte has officially lit its giant Christmas tree, highlighting the town’s Yuletide celebration with a design that pays tribute to its famous *sundang* (bolo) industry.
The illuminated display, installed at the town plaza, features oversized “sundang” ornaments—reflecting one of Carigara’s oldest and most recognized cottage industries. The tree has drawn large crowds in recent days after photos of its unique design circulated on social media ahead of the formal lighting ceremony held on Sunday,Nov. 30.
“The sundang is iconic in Carigara, and it’s only fitting that it is represented in our Christmas display,” Mayor Eduardo Ong Jr. said during the program.
Vice Mayor Jimmy Camposano also praised the inclusion of the sundang, noting that it honors Barangay Jugaban, where the industry first took root and continues to thrive.
The making of sundang in Carigara traces its history to at least 1922 and has been handed down across generations. Travelers entering the town are typically greeted by rows of sundang displayed outside blacksmith shops—like wind chimes—signaling their arrival in Carigara.
Mayor Ong also announced that the municipal government will distribute spaghetti packages to all households as a Christmas gift, encouraging families to enjoy the holiday season together.
