TACLOBAN CITY – The city government of Borongan plans to institutionalize a sports development program to provide sustained support to young athletes and strengthen the city’s participation in national competitions, Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda said.
Agda announced the plan during the general orientation for aspiring athletes for the Batang Pinoy 2026 national games held at the Barangay A Covered Court on Sept. 26.
He said the proposed program will focus on developing athletes, enhancing the skills of coaches and providing quality and durable sports equipment to help nurture the city’s growing pool of young sporting talents.
The announcement came as the city held qualifying rounds on Sept. 26 and 27 to select members of the official Borongan City delegation to the Batang Pinoy 2026 national games, scheduled in Bacolod City in December.
Aspiring athletes competed for slots in athletics, taekwondo, 3×3 basketball, badminton, futsal, boxing, arnis, skateboarding, table tennis, tennis, archery and chess.
City Administrator Atty. Romeo Alexis Devora also highlighted the role of sports in youth development, saying participation in athletic activities can provide young people with opportunities to compete in national sports competitions and leagues while developing discipline and determination.
The planned sports development program is part of the city government’s efforts to provide long-term support to local athletes and further develop sporting talent in Borongan.
For the young athletes, the qualifying rounds offered an opportunity to earn a spot on the city delegation and represent Borongan in the national competition.
