TACLOBAN CITY — Families in conflict-affected communities in San Jose de Buan, Samar, have received food assistance from the municipal government as local officials and the military strengthen coordination to address security concerns and help restore normalcy in the area.

The distribution of Family Food Packs (FFPs), led by Mayor Christal Jean Elizalde through the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO), was carried out in coordination with the Philippine Army’s 46th Infantry (Peacemakers) Battalion.

MSWDO head Ana Gabon said the assistance was intended to help affected households meet their immediate food needs, noting that security concerns had disrupted some government programs and services.

The food packs were provided by the regional office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development following a request from the municipal government.

During the distribution, Capt. Jesse Orven Tumambing, civil-military operations officer of the 46th Infantry Battalion, briefed residents on the security situation and emphasized the importance of community cooperation in protecting civilians and maintaining peace.

Mayor Elizalde assured residents that the local government would continue prioritizing their welfare and safety. She urged them to remain calm, united and cooperative as authorities work to address the situation.

The relief operation followed a meeting between Elizalde and Philippine Army officials on Oct. 7 to discuss the municipality’s peace and security situation and strengthen coordination in addressing insurgency.

During a subsequent courtesy call, Col. Marlo Jomalesa, acting commander of the 801st Infantry Brigade, and Lt. Col. Marvin Inocencio, commanding officer of the 46th Infantry Battalion, reaffirmed their commitment to working with the local government to protect communities and maintain peace and order.

Elizalde expressed the municipal government’s determination to end insurgency, saying the New People’s Army (NPA) and its violent activities have no place in the municipality. She also reaffirmed the local government’s support for the Army’s efforts to secure communities.

Jomalesa welcomed the municipal government’s cooperation and called for sustained collaboration among the military, local officials and community leaders to achieve lasting peace.

The meeting also highlighted efforts to encourage remaining NPA members to surrender, return to civilian life and avail themselves of available government assistance.

The municipal government said it would continue coordinating with concerned agencies to provide assistance to affected families, protect residents and help communities return to normal activities.
