MATAG-OB,Leyte– This town is now selling at P20 per kilogram of rice, targeting only the poorest of the poor as beneficiaries.

And they were able to accomplish this with the able support of a private organization, says Mayor Bernandino ‘Bernie’ Tacoy.

Tacoy said that he is thankful that the I-unlad Kabuhayan Foundation is helping his farmers increase their yields by providing them fertilizers through loans.

The town mayor said that the foundation provides five bottles of liquid fertilizers to the more than 400 farmers of which one bottle is considered free.

“And in turn, the farmers who have secured loans from the I-unlad Kabuhayan Foundation are to give five kilograms to the foundation as part of their payment,” Tacoy said on Saturday (May 11).

The surplus collected from the farmers were then sold at P20 per kilogram, the town mayor said.

“Unfortunately, we are only targeting the poorest people of Matag-ob like senior citizens who have no income of their own,” Tacoy said.

“This is in response to the promise of our beloved President, Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., to sell rice at P20 per kilogram,” the town mayor added, referring to the promise of then presidential candidate Marcos to sell rice at P20 per kilogram once he gets elected.
The promise has yet to be largely achieved.

Last May 8, the municipal government and the I-unlad Foundation were able to sell at P20 per kilogram to the more than 1,500 poor families of Matag-ob, about 105 kms away from Tacloban City.

Each of the buyers was only allowed five kilograms of the premium rice, Tacoy said.
The money collected from those who bought the rice goes to the foundation.

Tacoy said that he hopes that they can sustain this program with the continued assistance of the I-unlad Kabuhayan Foundation, a Manila-based group that assists farmers in the country to have their yield increase by providing organic fertilizers.

He added that the availability of rice being sold at P20 per kilogram would depend on the supply though.

The rice prices at the town’s public market and various stores, however, remain high at more than P50 per kilogram, depending on the variety.

The town has more than 1,000 registered farmers tilling over 1,400 hectares of farm lots.
Last year, Matag-ob produced 4,122.38 tons of palay.

TACLOBAN CITY– Leyte Governor Carlos Jericho ‘Icot’ Petilla clarified that The Oriental Leyte remains under the ownership of the provincial government, dispelling any confusion about the status of the region’s largest accommodation facility.

“The lessor of Oriental Hotel sold their company to another entity. They did not close; they simply transferred ownership to the new management,” the governor explained.

However, Petilla refrained from disclosing the identities of the new management, citing that he has not yet had the opportunity to meet with any officials from the company.
To recall, last April 6, the hotel management announced of its closure without providing any reason.

Situated adjacent to the McArthur Landing Memorial National Park, Oriental Leyte stands as Eastern Visayas’ sole four-star hotel, as recognized by the Department of Tourism.

Originally leased from the province by the LKY Group of Companies for 30 years starting in 2012, the hotel boasts 129 rooms, nine suites, 13 function rooms, videoke facilities, a fitness center, a spa, and three swimming pools.

“Per our contract terms, we must be informed if there is a change in ownership. Recently, they notified us of the change. However, we still need to convene with them to discuss their future plans,” Petilla said.

Expressing concern over the lack of communication from the new management, the governor stressed, “I am demanding a clear plan from them as I am unaware of their intentions.”

“If the hotel ceases operations, the contract will terminate, and it will be offered to another party. They must resume operations by October 20; otherwise, we will reconsider the contract and seek other alternatives,” he said.

Gov.Petilla emphasized the hotel’s significance not only for Leyte but for the entire Region 8, underscoring its status as a top-tier establishment.

“We need flagship hotels like Oriental Leyte to cater to the needs of both locals and tourists,” he said.

Originally known as MacArthur Park Beach Resort and constructed in 1983 at the behest of former first lady Imelda Marcos, the property was seized in 1986 following the People Power Revolution. Ownership was subsequently transferred to the Leyte provincial government in 2009.

Following the transfer, the property was leased to the LKY Group of Companies for three decades.

Unfortunately, the hotel, facing Leyte Gulf, suffered significant damage from Super Typhoon “Yolanda” in 2013 but resumed operations in 2016 after a three-year hiatus.

N. Samar links BOI to help boost its coconut industry

A copra processing facility in being planned

TACLOBAN CITY—The provincial government of Northern Samar plans to further boost its coconut industry by partnering with the Board of Investment (BOI) to attract investors to build a copra processing facility.

John Allen Berbon, head of the Provincial Economic Development and Investment Promotions Office (Pedipo), said that they presented their proposal to the agri-based industry division of BOI on Thursday (May 9), and received an encouraging response.
“The BOI will facilitate connections with potential investors for our envisioned coconut processing center,” he said in an interview.

He emphasized that the establishment of such a facility would lead to the comprehensive utilization of coconut resources, including husk, juice, shell, and not just copra (meat).
Furthermore, Berbon highlighted the direct benefits to coconut farmers, anticipating an increase in copra prices as they would have the option to sell their produce directly to the facility, bypassing middlemen.

“This would reduce their expenses and result in higher earnings for farmers,” he added.
Northern Samar ranks as the 18th largest coconut-producing province in the Philippines, boasting an annual production of 315,000 metric tons in 2023, and with over 86,000 registered coconut farmers.

Berbon disclosed that the proposed facility would require an investment of at least P300 million, with an estimated output of 60 metric tons of coconut products daily.

Despite being abundant in coconuts, Northern Samar currently has limited processing facilities, with only one oil mill, one coco-sugar producer, two virgin coconut oil producers, and three coco coir producers.

Berbon emphasized the significance of capitalizing on the province’s strengths in the coconut industry and expanding investment promotion efforts to drive economic growth and competitiveness in the coconut market.

“By leveraging our coconut industry strengths and enhancing investment promotion initiatives, Northern Samar aims to unlock its agricultural potential, spur economic development, and establish itself as a formidable contender in the coconut sector,” he said. (JOEY A. GABIETA)
