Drying season

0

Until now, some rice farmers in our region continually use cemented roads and highways as drying fields for their palay despite their knowledge that this convenience comes at a significant cost to public safety. The presence of rice grains on road surfaces creates a hazardous condition for motorists, especially motorbike riders, who are at a high risk of losing control and suffering potentially fatal accidents. The practice is a dangerous tradition that must be halted immediately and the authorities must take decisive action to prevent these preventable tragedies.

The primary concern with drying rice on roads is the slippery surface it creates for vehicles, particularly motorcycles. Motorbike tires, which have less traction than car tires, can easily slide on the loose grains, causing riders to lose control and crash. This danger is amplified at higher speeds, where even a small patch of rice can be enough to cause a devastating accident. The risk is not hypothetical; there have been numerous reports of injuries and fatalities linked to this practice. The safety of road users must take precedence over the convenience of drying palay on public thoroughfares.

Furthermore, roads and highways are built for transportation, not for agricultural purposes. Using them as drying grounds undermines their primary function and creates unnecessary hazards for all users. The disruption caused by this practice extends beyond motorbike riders to all forms of vehicular traffic, including cars, buses, and trucks. Vehicles swerving to avoid patches of rice can lead to collisions and additional accidents, putting even more lives at risk. It is a misuse of public infrastructure that jeopardizes the safety and efficiency of the transportation network.

The responsibility for ending this dangerous practice lies with both the farmers and local authorities. Farmers must recognize that the roads are not extensions of their farms and that using them in this manner endangers the community. Farmers must seek alternative drying methods, such as using designated drying facilities or employing modern drying technology. Simultaneously, local authorities must enforce regulations that prohibit the drying of rice on public roads. This enforcement should include penalties for violations to ensure compliance and deter future incidents.

The safety of passengers, riders, and commuters should be a paramount concern. Allowing the continued use of roads for drying rice not only compromises public safety but also reflects poorly on the community’s commitment to protecting its members. Local authorities should demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of its residents and the proper use of public infrastructure. It is time to prioritize safety and uphold the intended purpose of our roads and highways.

Failed delivery

The existence of delivery riders showing a lack of commitment and honesty in their jobs has been troubling many customers who rely on online shopping. Instances of delivery personnel selectively skipping certain addresses, and subsequently falsifying delivery attempts, have raised serious concerns about their professionalism and integrity. This behavior undermines the trust that customers place in delivery services, highlighting a significant failure in the system meant to ensure that paid-for goods are delivered efficiently and reliably.

One common tactic these lazy delivery riders employ is making a brief, intentionally missed call to the customer. They use this as false evidence of having attempted to contact the recipient. Without making a genuine effort to reach the address, they then mark the delivery as failed. This deceptive practice serves as a convenient excuse to avoid traveling to less desirable locations. Consequently, customers are left in the lurch, anxiously waiting for packages that never arrive. This tactic is not only dishonest but also grossly unprofessional. It betrays the fundamental principles of reliable customer service.

The problem is exacerbated when the items being delivered have already been paid for online. Unlike cash-on-delivery (COD) orders, where the delivery company’s financial loss is minimal, prepaid items leave the customer at a significant disadvantage. Having already parted with their money, these customers are forced into a stressful waiting game, often with little recourse if the delivery fails. The emotional and financial strain caused by such dishonest practices can be significant, destroying consumer confidence in online shopping platforms.

This selective approach to delivery is not just an inconvenience; it is a breach of trust. Customers choose online shopping for its convenience and the promise of reliable delivery. When delivery riders cherry-pick their destinations, they are effectively breaking that promise. It reflects poorly on the entire logistics chain and damages the reputation of both the delivery company and the online retailer. This behavior calls for immediate and stringent corrective measures to restore trust and ensure accountability.

Delivery companies must take decisive action to address this issue. They need to implement strict monitoring and verification processes to ensure that delivery attempts are genuine. GPS tracking, for instance, can provide evidence of whether a rider has truly visited the delivery address. Additionally, companies should consider adopting policies that penalize riders who consistently fail to meet their delivery commitments without valid reasons. Such measures would discourage dishonest behavior and promote a culture of accountability and dedication.

Termination should be a serious consideration for those riders who repeatedly demonstrate a lack of commitment to their duties. While it is important to address any underlying issues that might contribute to this behavior, such as inadequate pay or unrealistic delivery quotas, the primary focus must remain on maintaining high standards of service. Riders who are unwilling or unable to perform their job with the required level of professionalism should be replaced by individuals who value honesty and customer satisfaction.

Moreover, online retailers must collaborate closely with delivery companies to ensure that their customers’ experiences are consistently positive. This collaboration can include sharing customer feedback, monitoring delivery performance, and taking swift action against repeated failures. Retailers have a vested interest in ensuring that their products reach customers in a timely and reliable manner, and they must hold delivery partners to high standards.

The integrity of the delivery process is crucial for the continued growth and success of e-commerce. By addressing the laziness and dishonesty of some delivery riders, companies can protect their reputations and ensure that customers continue to trust and rely on their services. Ensuring that every parcel is delivered with diligence and honesty is not just a matter of good business practice; it is a fundamental aspect of respecting and valuing the customer.

Receptive and responsive to God’s grace

CHRIST once told his disciples, and now us, that we should be the salt and light of the earth. (cfr. Mt 5,13-16) In other words, we should give the proper flavor and provide the proper light so all of us can be led to our proper destination.

This basic truth about ourselves gives rise to the duty that we have to help one another spiritually more than anything else. It is in our spiritual bond that actually gives rise to all our other relations with everybody else according to the different aspects of our nature.
This means that we should always give good example to others even to the point of inspiring them, i.e., giving them the proper spirit, the spirit of Christ. For this, we really need to have the very spirit of Christ ourselves, to be “another Christ” if not “Christ himself.”

Hopefully, we can echo St. Paul’s words: “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” (Gal 2,20) This is the ideal to aim at, because Christ himself said, “I am the light of the world…the man who follows me will have the light of life.” (Jn 8,12) This can happen if we would only know how to be truly receptive and responsive to God’s initiative to make us like him through Christ in the Holy Spirit.

We have to realize that we are not only meant to live a natural life, but rather also a spiritual and supernatural life. God has created us in such a way that we have the capacity to receive and to respond to God’s will to make us sharers of his divine life and nature. That is why we are endowed with intelligence and will, so we can know God and his will for us, and choose to love him and to be like him.

We need to find practical ways to learn how to be receptive and responsive to God’s grace, to his sharing of his life and nature with us. Like, right in the morning as we wake up, the first thing that we should try to do is to address ourselves to God, offering ourselves and everything that we will be doing for the day to him.

It’s important that right from the beginning of the day, we get strongly focused on God. He should be the center of our life, of our thoughts, desires, words and deeds. And all throughout the day, we should try our best to keep this awareness alive.

Thus, we should avail ourselves of some effective plan of life to drive this kind of awareness going. Some practices of piety like periods of mental prayer and contemplation, spiritual reading, receiving the sacraments especially the Holy Mass and Communion, and other devotional means, would be helpful.

The ideal is that the whole day should be spent with God who, in the first place, is always around. He is in us and around us. He is wherever we are, and his presence is actually active, full of solicitude for us. We need to perceive this reality and act according to it.

Let’s hope that we can end the day convinced that we have spent it with him and for him. In other words, to be receptive and responsive to God’s grace is for us to be true contemplatives even as we immerse ourselves in our earthly and temporal affairs.

Without due process, they were eliminated. The death was painful perhaps and the fear before the death was more painful than the actual death, perhaps. But then again , they died and still dead up to this day.

Mortui dicuntur, the dead had spoken and in the dead of the night I was awaken by the nightmare that it is, they want me to write a piece about them, thousands of them. Those that had perished in the last Administration’s War on Drugs.

It was this viral video of a classroom presided by a balding Englishman Professor who at the get go send a lady out of his classroom without any warning. Then afterwards he asked the class about their definition of justice and they give a wide array of intellectual definitions. Having all these notion and description the Professor asked why the class did not raise protest when the professor sent the lady out with no reason at all? The reality came crushing in , the people do not really care about what is happening around him or her, not until he is part of the victims and the person is actually hurt by these chaos!
The figures look and felt sad. The 6,000 police estimated dead of the Duterte’s Drug war and the United Nation estimates of 27,000 dead. Modestly we can say that there had been thousands of deaths and very few accountability, very rare redemption on this very horrid reality of deaths and killings of mostly POOR suspects.

Yet after the Marcos Administration came with the new approach of winning the war on drugs the people perhaps used to the blood thirsty approach cried for more blood. However as time goes by when the smoke cleared and the drug war with a new approach focused on the apprehension of BIG drug dealers , it was not well applauded but the tons of drug haul was a very welcome development. When the House of Representatives came up with the idea of conducting a separate and prompt Probe and Hearing on Extrajudicial Killings, I was happy.

Late one evening in a deep slumber, I heard the voice of the victims, shouting in loud voices , write for us, write something for us , something about us !
These are loud yet clear mortui dicuntur. it is the dead that shouts! They need justice, the dead needs final resolution.

1 in 4 children globally live in severe child food poverty due to inequity, conflict, and climate crises – UNICEF

0

MANILA/NEW YORK– Around 181 million children worldwide under 5 years of age – or 1 in 4 – are experiencing severe child food poverty, making them up to 50 percent more likely to experience wasting, a life-threatening form of malnutrition, a new UNICEF report reveals today.

In the Philippines, efforts to reduce stunting (low height for age) and wasting (low weight for age) have led to a decrease over the years with wasting showing the steadiest decline. There has been progress a year into the Government’s 2023-2028 Plan of Action for Nutrition, which aims to increase consumer demand for healthy diets and improve access to adequate, age-appropriate, nutrient-dense, diverse, safe, and sustainable diets.
The island nation is also making their cash transfers more nutrition-sensitive by targeting the most vulnerable families to help alleviate poverty and make quality food more affordable. However, the report also reveals that the Philippines is still one of the countries that account for 65 percent of the total number of children living in severe child food poverty.

For the first time, the global report Child Food Poverty: Nutrition Deprivation in Early Childhood analyses the impacts and causes of dietary deprivation among the world’s youngest people in nearly 100 countries and across income groups. It warns that millions of children under the age of five cannot access and consume a nutritious and diverse diet to sustain optimal growth and development in early childhood and beyond.
Children who consume, at most, two of eight defined food groups are in severe child food poverty. The eight food groups include breastmilk, grains and roots, pulses and nuts, dairy products, meat, poultry and fish, eggs, Vitamin A-rich fruits and vegetables, and other fruits and vegetables.

According to the report, around 18 percent, or 2 million, of children in the Philippines are severely food-poor. Four out of five children in this situation are fed only breastmilk/milk and/or a starchy staple, such as rice, corn, or wheat. Less than 10 percent of these children are fed fruits and vegetables. And less than 5 percent are fed nutrient-dense foods such as eggs, fish, poultry, or meat.

“Children living in severe food poverty are children living on the brink. This can have an irreversible negative impact on their survival, growth, and brain development,” said UNICEF Representative to Philippines Oyunsaikhan Dendevnorov. “Children who consume just rice and some vegetable soup a day are up to 50 percent more likely to experience severe forms of malnutrition.”

The report warns that while countries are still recovering from the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effects of growing inequities, conflicts, and the climate crisis have pushed food prices and the cost of living to record high levels.

Nearly half (46 percent) of all cases of severe child food poverty are among poor households where income poverty is likely to be a major driver, while 54 percent – or 97 million children – live in relatively wealthier households, among whom poor food environments and feeding practices are the main drivers of food poverty in early childhood, the report finds.

The report also revealed that consumption of unhealthy products was particularly high in the Philippines, where more than one in five children consumed an unhealthy food and/or sweet beverage – despite these children consuming two or fewer food groups per day.
To end child food poverty, UNICEF calls on governments, development and humanitarian organizations, donors, civil society, and the food and beverage industry to urgently: transform food systems so that nutritious, diverse, and healthy foods are the most accessible, affordable, and desirable option for caregivers to feed young children;leverage health systems to deliver essential nutrition services to prevent and treat malnutrition in early childhood, including support for community health and nutrition workers to counsel parents and families on child feeding and care practices; and activate social protection systems to address income poverty through social transfers (cash, food, and vouchers), in ways that are responsive to the food and nutrition needs of vulnerable children and their families.
