Initiative to boost financial inclusion, digitalization agenda of the Philippines

PSA, DICT, and GCash pilot National ID eVerify integration

In line with a shared mission to promote financial inclusion in the country, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), together with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), has tapped GCash as a pilot testing partner for its National ID eVerify platform.

The initiative, led by the PSA and the DICT, aims to provide a secure and seamless way for government agencies and private sector partners to authenticate their customers’ identities.

For financial institutions like GCash, this platform can facilitate a faster and more secure know-your-customer (KYC) process, as it provides a reliable method to verify the identity of potential customers. This allows individuals to provide fewer physical requirements and speed up their account opening process.

With National ID eVerify, organizations can better avoid document fraud and ensure that the civil registry documents presented by individuals are genuine and issued by the PSA.
“At GCash, trust and security are at the core of our work for our customers. When we secure our services through a centralized authentication process, we can ensure the legitimacy of all our users through the National ID. We are better positioned to foster financial inclusion for more Filipinos when we have safer financial platforms,” said Ren-Ren Reyes, president and CEO of GCash mobile wallet operator, G-Xchange, Inc.

Reyes added, “This opportunity to continue working with the PSA and the DICT not only allows us to improve the user experience further but also contributes to the Philippine government’s digitalization agenda.”

Reyes noted that IDs issued through the PSA’s Philippine Identification System (PhilSys), including PhilIDs and ePhilIDs, are already among the most commonly presented valid IDs for GCash account verification.

Undersecretary Dennis Mapa, National Statistician and Civil Registrar General of the PSA, said, “The Philippine Statistics Authority remains steadfast in its goal to register all Filipinos within the National ID system ensuring our unwavering commitment to providing a unified National identification system to all our kababayans.”

David Almirol Jr., Undersecretary for e-Government at the DICT, said that GCash’s vital participation in the pilot tests will lead to more efficient and responsive systems.

“The National eVerify will streamline and improve the way we do things in the government. This will amplify and simplify private and government consumption. If we are able to implement this well with the help of both the private and government sectors, the digital transformation in the Philippines will come to fruition. Efficient services shall be delivered to the Filipino people. No long queues in government offices. Filipinos can now process documents and apply private and government services in the comfort of their homes,” he said.

Frederick D. Go, Secretary and Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Economic Affairs (SAPIEA), also noted that this initiative is just the beginning of its strategic partnership with PSA, DICT, and GCash as they share the goal of providing vital assistance to the most vulnerable communities in the country. He said, “The digital National ID is a beacon of hope – a reminder that even the most ambitious dreams can become reality when we work together towards a common goal.

Currently, GCash is closely working with the PSA and the DICT to ensure seamless integration with the eVerify platform.(PR)

ARTECHE, Eastern Samar– House Minority Floor Leader Marcelino Libanan has called on Filipinos to rally behind President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as tensions between the Philippines and China escalate.

Rep. Libanan of the 4Ps party-list group emphasized the importance of national unity in supporting President Marcos during this critical period, regardless of political affiliations.
Libanan underscored the significance of standing together as a nation, especially in the face of China, considered the world’s second most powerful country after the United States.

“I urge all Filipinos to fully support the President,” he stated during an interview on Saturday (June 8) on the sidelines of an inauguration of an academic building at the Eastern Samar State University satellite campus in this town.

“Unity under his leadership is paramount, particularly as we, a small nation, confront the challenges posed by a formidable country like China,” Libanan added.

While President Marcos has taken a firm stance against what many perceive as bullying and harassment by China’s forces in the West Philippine Sea, he has also clarified that he does not seek to escalate tensions into potential conflict.

Additionally, Libanan voiced his support for the total closure of Philippine offshore gaming operators (Pogos) in the country.

He proposed centralizing their operations in designated hubs to prevent potential illegal activities.

“The movement of Pogo workers should be restricted to these hubs to mitigate security risks. Strict supervision of operations is important,” he added.

Despite the revenue generated by Pogos and the employment opportunities they provide, concerns over their operations persist.

The Senate is currently investigating Pogo activities, with Bamban Mayor Alice Guo at the center of scrutiny due to her alleged ties to Pogo operations in her municipality.

BUDDING LITERARY WRITERS. The provincial government of Northern Samar has come up with a writers workshop to help revive the interest of the young generations of the province rich culture and history thru poems and poetry.
(NORTHERN SAMAR PROVINCIAL INFORMATION OFFICE)

TACLOBAN CITY – In its efforts to preserve its rich literary and cultural heritage, the provincial government of Northern Samar initiated a workshop attended by aspiring literary writers.

The five-day writing workshop, concluding on Tuesday (June 11), was attended by some of Eastern Visayas’ renowned literary writers.

Josiah Rei Echano, whose office, the provincial disaster risk reduction management office, is one of the main organizers of the event, said that the workshop aims to revive the interest of young Nortehanons in the rich culture and heritage of their province through poems, poetry, and book writing.

“We don’t want to lose the distinct voice of our culture and tradition. By immortalizing it in the semantics and literary devices of literature through these writing workshops, the next generations will never forget who they really are. They can march forward with pride as one people,” he said on Sunday (June 9).

Echano added: “If we lose our culture, the memory of our race, heritage, and our people will also be annihilated as if we have not existed.”

Among the invited literary artists from the region were Merlie Alunan, professor emeritus of the University of the Philippines-Tacloban and multiple Carlos Palanca Memorial awardee; Kristian Cordero, TOYM (Ten Outstanding Young Men) awardee; Jerry Gracio, a multi-awardee writer and former commissioner of the Commission of Filipino Language; and literature scholar Michael Carlo Villas of the Visayas State University in Baybay City.

The workshop, attended by 40 individuals across the province, is part of the month-long celebration of the founding anniversary of Northern Samar, which is marked on June 19.
The celebration is known as the “Ibabao Festival,” signifying the ancient name of the province, the site of one of the first revolts by the natives during the Spanish period.

The event, which is mainly supported by Governor Edwin Ongchuan, is also in coordination with the University of Eastern Philippines, the only government-run university in the province, based in its capital, Catarman.
