TACLOBAN CITY – More than 1,000 residents from resettlement sites in northern Tacloban purchased rice at P20 per kilo during the launch of the Department of Agriculture’s “Benteng Bigas Meron Na” (BBM) program through Kadiwa on Wheels at St. Pope Francis Village.
The initiative, part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s effort to make rice affordable, prioritizes vulnerable sectors such as senior citizens, persons with disabilities, solo parents, and Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries.
City Agriculturist Romelo Anade said the rollout marks the first time the BBM program reached these communities.
“We’re expediting requirements, including a Memorandum of Agreement with Food Terminal Inc., to ensure regular distribution until December or longer,” he said.
Tacloban earlier requested 30,000 bags of NFA rice, but implementation was delayed due to logistical and documentary issues. For this initial sale, eligible buyers could purchase up to 10 kilos at the subsidized price, verified through social welfare and OSCA records.
The Kadiwa on Wheels caravan also offered fresh produce from the New Kawayan Farmers Association, supporting local farmers and enhancing food security.
