TACLOBAN CITY — Northern Samar welcomed the Christmas season with warmth, laughter, and plenty of sparkle as the ‘Karibhungan sa Pasko 2025’ officially brightened the province — proving once again that the holidays shine brighter when the whole community comes together.
Now on its ninth year, the celebration once again placed the towering giant Ibabao Christmas Tree at center stage. Built with precision by the young engineers and architects of the Provincial General Service Office (PGSO) and adorned with beautifully handcrafted ornaments created by persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at Dancalan Jail, the tree has become a symbol of unity and shared purpose — and a favorite backdrop for family photos.
The ceremonial lighting was led by Governor Harris Ongchuan, First District Representative Nikko Paul Daza, Second District Representative Edwin Ongchuan, Vice Governor Clarence Dato, and other provincial officials — and was welcomed with cheers from families, children, and visitors who filled the Capitol grounds.
Adding to the holiday magic, 12 national government agencies joined the festive Christmas Village contest, transforming their booths into snowy, glitter-filled “Winter Wonderland” displays.
Cash prizes are up for grabs, with P400,000 for the champion, P300,000 for second place, and P200,000 for third. Non-winners won’t go home empty-handed — each will receive P70,000, plus P10,000 for special awards.
Governor Ongchuan thanked everyone who helped bring the celebration to life and dedicated this year’s festivities to the people of Northern Samar.
“Ini nga light up hinumdumi natu nga bisan nanu an atu mga challenges sa adlaw-adlaw, adi la gihapon an Provincial Government han Northern Samar maghahatag hin kalipayan sa iyo,” he said, drawing applause from the crowd.
The celebration also marked the opening of the ‘Karibhungan sa Pasko Night Market’, with the ribbon-cutting led by Vice Governor Clarence Dato and members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan. The market aims to boost local businesses and provide a nightly gathering place for families.
Visitors can look forward to a tempting mix of comfort food, sweets, and holiday treats from seven concessionaires, along with live performances from local bands — perfect for a night of strolling, shopping, and soaking in the Christmas spirit.
The night market will run until December 23, 2025, giving everyone plenty of time to enjoy the sights, sounds, and flavors of the holidays.
