TACLOBAN CITY — The newly completed Balud-Duka Bridge in Barugo, Leyte is now providing safer and faster travel for residents and nearby communities, further strengthening the road network connected to the Bagahupi-Babatngon-Sta. Cruz-Barugo-Carigara National Road.
Implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Leyte 2nd District Engineering Office, the 140-meter bridge was constructed in two phases and now serves as a key infrastructure link for farmers, students, workers, and traders in Barugo and adjacent municipalities.
The project included bored pile foundations, masonry and riprap protection for durability against erosion, roadway widening, lined canal works, thermoplastic pavement markings, and LED solar streetlights for safety and night visibility.
Barangay Balud Captain Marion Corro recalled the difficulties residents endured before the project.
“Our bridge back then was only a single wooden plank. It was very hard and dangerous to cross. Now, we no longer struggle — four-wheel vehicles can pass smoothly and even students don’t have problems anymore,” he said.
Corro added that transporting farm produce and goods from the uplands has become easier, helping both residents and fish vendors.
“I am very thankful to the government and the DPWH. This bridge has made travel more convenient for us and nearby barangays.”
Phase 1 of the bridge project was completed on March 14, 2025 under the 2023 General Appropriations Act (P144.6 million). Phase 2 began on June 18, 2024 with an additional P53 million under the 2024 GAA, implemented by Fairchild Builders & Developers Inc.
The Balud-Duka Bridge is expected to reduce travel time and improve the movement of goods and essential services, marking a significant milestone in Barugo’s local development.
