TACLOBAN CITY — Teachers assigned to remote communities in Maslog, Eastern Samar, will receive weekly rice, fuel and transportation assistance from the municipal government to help ease the costs of serving in far-flung schools.
Mayor Septemio Santiago announced the assistance during a meeting with municipal-paid teachers (MPTs) on Sept. 7, where they discussed education programs and initiatives as well as concerns and challenges faced by teachers in their assignments.
Under the program, MPTs assigned to the barangays of Carayacay, Taytay, Tugas, Libertad and San Roque will receive six kilograms of rice every week.
Teachers who travel home every week will also receive transportation assistance for their Monday trips to their assigned schools and Friday trips back home.
Those using their own motorcycles will be provided with two liters of gasoline per week if assigned to more distant areas, while other MPTs will receive one liter, depending on the distance between their homes and assigned schools.
MPTs without motorcycles will be transported to their assigned schools using the municipal government vehicle currently being used for its Libreng Sakay (Free Ride) Program.
Santiago said the assistance aims to reduce the transportation and other weekly expenses of teachers serving communities outside the town center.
He said the measures form part of the municipal government’s continuing support for teachers and its efforts to strengthen the delivery of quality and inclusive education in Maslog.
The mayor also described teachers as important partners of the local government in educating children and preparing them for the future.
Maslog is a fifth-class municipality in the interior part of Eastern Samar. It has 12 barangays with a combined population of 5,438, based on the 2024 Census of Population.
