NSSDEO, Brgy. Burabud, Laoang, Northern Samar – The Department of Public Works and Highways Northern Samar Second District Engineering Office (DPWH-NSSDEO) has conducted a rapid inspection of the road and bridge infrastructures in the pacific towns of the Second District of Northern Samar yesterday, May 7, 2025.

The Acting Chief of Maintenance Section, Engineer Nicanor L. Mejos, Jr., immediately instructed his technical personnel to conduct inspection of all vital infrastructures within the area of jurisdiction of pacific towns after the magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck Northern Samar yesterday, May 7, 2025, at 12:41 PM.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the epicenter was traced to 12.83°N, 126.02°E – 091 km N 65° E of the municipality of Mapanas, with a depth of 10 km and was tectonic in origin. Intensity II was felt by residents in the municipality of Palapag and the adjacent towns.

Engr. Mejos then deployed the assigned Maintenance Point Person, Engineer Aivan Kier C. Salazar, who conducted a rapid inspection within the Palapag-Mapanas area. Engr. Salazar immediately headed to the Manaybanay Bridge, Moperet Bridge, Naliwatan Bridge, Cabatuan Bridge, Mapno Bridge, Palapag Bridge, and Palapag-Mapanas Road.

Based on the situational report submitted by the DPWH-NSSDEO, all roads and bridges are passable and no defects or damage to infrastructure have been reported. However, PHIVOLCS Director Teresito C. Bacolcol said there is a possibility of aftershocks. Therefore, the district continues to remind everyone to be vigilant for any eventualities.
