TACLOBAN CITY – Motorists in Tabontabon, Leyte can now enjoy safer and smoother travel following the completion of a P17.6-million asphalt overlay project by the Leyte 2nd District Engineering Office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The preventive maintenance project covers 786 linear meters of the Kiling-Tanauan-Tabontabon-Julita Road, a vital tertiary route that serves residents, students, and workers in the area.

According to District Engineer Leo Edward Oppura, the project includes the application of asphalt overlay over the existing pavement, along with thermoplastic pavement markings to improve road visibility, especially during nighttime and inclement weather.

“This project enhances the road’s lifespan and promotes safer, more efficient travel. It reduces commuting time, especially for students and workers, and lowers long-term costs associated with frequent road repairs and vehicle maintenance,” he said.

The project was implemented under the DPWH CY 2025 General Appropriations Act and was officially completed on April 29, 2025.

Local officials and residents welcomed the improvement. Charie Pagalan, barangay chairwoman of District II Rizal, Tabontabon, recalled the previous state of the road.
“Andati nga sitwasyon hini nga karsada, duro hin ka lubaklubak. Ngani gutiay la an nangagi nga mga sarakyan tungod han kakuri han dalan,” she said, describing the road as once riddled with potholes that discouraged motorists.

She expressed gratitude to the DPWH for what she called a “significant assistance” to their community.

“Dako nga bulig ini labi na ha mga estudyante, mga namamasahero, ngan ha mga naghahanapbuhay. Waray na hira pag-ihralinan tungod han maraot nga karsada,” she added.

The newly completed road is now expected to boost local mobility and economic activity, especially in rural areas where access remains a key development challenge.
