Catarman N. Samar-As part of its long-term flood mitigation measures, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) continues its dredging operations in the heavily silted river channels in Catarman, Northern Samar.

In an interview, Engr. John Von B. Asid, a Dredge Master of DPWH Regional Equipment Management Division (EMD), stated that, as of now,50.43% of the target has been achieved, with approximately 64,496 cubic meters of dredged material successfully cleared from the waterways.

District Engineer Alvin A. Ignacio personally oversees the dredging operations during his site inspection along the waterways of Brgy. Yakal.

“We really need to check and ensure that operations are proceeding smoothly, despite several factors encountered during the conduct of said activity.” he said.

“There are times that operations may experience intermittent stoppages due to equipment repairs or preventive maintenance yet we are motivated to continue our operations to provide residents with much-needed relief especially during inclement weather.” DE Ignacio further stated.

He also clarified that the operations are sustained through the collective efforts and resource-sharing of DPWH Northern Samar First District Engineering Office, DPWH Regional Office VIII, the Equipment Management Division, and key partners such as the Provincial and Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (PENRO and CENRO), along with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Catarman.

Once completed, the dredging operation will help improve the flow of waterways, thereby protecting lives and properties.
